Dear MJA:
Digressing to a statement of the obvious, 'up' is a relative term, dependent on the coordinate system from which the observation is established.
'Up' in this hemisphere is what would be - as you have indicated - a northerly direction on a map, for instance.
On the other hand, 'up' is the opposite direction (what we call 'down') on the opposite, southern side of the planet...
This perspective is coordinated with the consideration of Einstein's elevator, wherein 'up' is established by whatever direction the elevator is moving in - be it 'north', 'south, 'east', or 'west'; etceteras.
May this arrow point you on one of any number of 'upward' ways
