Dear MJA:
You appear to be lost and marooned in the embezzling parlance and off-topic jingoism of a compulsively gambling and drinking, hard-drug-addicted barrister and computer programmer-engineer, who over-extended and perished himself in your described gas station, in 1999.

Dear RP,

I wasn't lost till I read what you just wrote.
Whats an embezzling parlance and off-topic jingoism?
On second thought, unless its positive, I don't want to know.
Some of it does sound a bit like me, and how I use to be.
I confess, I use to own a gas station, and helped many lost travelers with directions much like yourself.
As for your "Which way is up" question, I hope this arrow below points you on your way,
and don't forget, always carry chains.

Dear MJA:
Digressing to a statement of the obvious, 'up' is a relative term, dependent on the coordinate system from which the observation is established.

'Up' in this hemisphere is what would be - as you have indicated - a northerly direction on a map, for instance.

On the other hand, 'up' is the opposite direction (what we call 'down') on the opposite, southern side of the planet...

This perspective is coordinated with the consideration of Einstein's elevator, wherein 'up' is established by whatever direction the elevator is moving in - be it 'north', 'south, 'east', or 'west'; etceteras.

May this arrow point you on one of any number of 'upward' ways

Sincerely,
- RP
