This has become a very good thread, thanks mkirkpatirk for having started it. It actually deserves a mindmap.

I find very original baudrunner's way of giving the physical meaning of each state.

HG's interpretation for me is very good, because it uses elements of our enviroment (to which we are used to). A very Greek form of explaining it.

Tinytree very well described the process into which every crisis evolves, I find specially good your naming of each.

Pagan, I really believe your data (''70% of humans don't achieve adulthood"), and what you said here:

Not quite what I ment but you seem to have hit the proverbial nail on the head.
Gives sort of the idea of what actually 'intellect' is (not to be confused with the terrm 'intelligence'); The mixture of humour and metaphor. The psicologists always look at the amount of humour and metaphor in a patient's discourse, to measure the person's intellectual level (which can be analogued to the stage the person is in).

Everyone keep it up, you have managed that someone like me is enthusiast about your pseudo-scientific theories.

I'm not sure of the point you're trying to make but in the research I have done on alchemy, it seems there are also 4 stages of transformation: nigredo, albedo, citrinitas and rubedo. The first stage seems to be purification of earthly influence, or removing identification with the elements of earth and water. The second stage is called the stage of the moon, and is characterised by an inward journey. The third stage, stage of the sun, talks of Divine Intellect and true knowledge and is a move into the mystical realm of enlightenment. The fourth stage incorporates the freedoms gained in the first three and is Pure spirit consciously chosing to live in the Earth as an enlightened being, with soul fully integrated into body. There is fire, death and pyschological implications in each state. Is this kind of what you mean?
No it is not what I meant Harmony,I understand what you are drawing from, but in this thread,I was using the examples drawn from
the eastern esoteric science, which actually talk about the crisis stages in life,I was not using any alchemy reference at all.
kind regards michael.
