IMAGINATION drives ABSTRACT THOUGHT which leads to discovery and invention...Religion believe it or not has proven to be (whether you agree with Religion or not) the most effective means of driving abstract thought.

Religion get's our neuronal firings going at optimum speed and evokes the most empassioned emotional responses in agreement and disagreement.

Fluent Pif seems to be on the same path with Einstein's statement that:
"Imagination is more important than knowledge".
No, RP, I think they are just as important as each other, as they are equal parts of the same psyche.

As an aside to this, at around the same time as Einstein there lived many great thinkers, all pushing into the same 'well' of knowledge, and it is not a bad idea to try to understand many of his peers, as well. Had they combined their respective thinkings, I think they may have been closer, as a collective, to understanding Truth, but because of the propensity to 'separate', they simply all drifted away from it! Worth remembering that Einstein was also one of the greatest admirers and supporters of Gandhi!

    I like this guy's thinking...
The scientist only imposes two things, namely truth and sincerity, imposes them upon himself and upon other scientists. (Erwin Schrödinger) - [This could also have been said by Gandhi about True spirituality! - "It is more correct to say that Truth is God, than God is Truth."]

The world is given to me only once, not one existing and one perceived. Subject and object are only one. The barrier between them cannot be said to have broken down as a result of recent experience in the physical sciences, for this barrier does not exist. (Erwin Schrödinger)

People look after the things they have affection for. It is thus essential that we learn to have affection for the planet that sustains us.

"The sense of threat from every quarter of what is known as the Establishment – which is to say, of modern civilization – is not altogether a put-on or an act for many of these young folk, but an actual condition of soul. The break-off is real, and what is being bombed and blown up outside are actual symbols of interior fears." - Joseph Campbell

Imagination of science needs solid reasoning whilst religion is the fancy of people...

Science requires objectivity - Imagination requires subjectivity

Again, a contradiction. 'Religion' was the 'science' of its day. It has since become something much less than it was, and is steadily losing its relevance, unless you concede that it is now only a political tool, in which case it is 'only a political tool', and therefore no longer 'religion'.

Both forms of further understanding require imagination - the ability to posit hitherto unknown possibilities, as more information is gathered. In the case of 'religion', so much evidence to the contrary position of an 'exterior God' is now discovered, that we must move on to 'other' possibilities.

    Re: Science 'versus' God?

Religion was always a tool to dominate the underprivilaged and the uneducated. Some some reason religion can whip up a frenzy which cannot be matched by science. Probably because science is more subtle and requires more process and time to prove itself...
