    Hi everyone

    Hello to all,

I came across this site by accident (unless you belive in fate in which case there are no accidents) and figured I'd better sign up quick to join in the fun. Most people just look blankly at me when I try to explain why I love physics so much. I never got around to studying it but luckily my dad and sister did so I've always had lots of books around to 'feed my habit'.

You all seem pretty clever and up to date with your theories so I'll have to do some catching up before I can join in properly!

    Welcome Elspeth,

Glad you could join us. All of us here love physics and philosophy and we love discussing the theory of everything. Hopefully you'll feel right at home so don't be afraid to share your thoughts with all of us. Looking forward to it

    Elspeth;
    Welcome to ToeQuest.
Most of us found our way here by accident or fate. The forum covers both methods.
Hope you enjoy your quest here.

    Elspeth,

I also came by accident, and I'm glad of it. But not everything that comes by accident is good: I wouldn't liek to find the TOE by accident, but my hard work... This gives one much more satisfaction.

Elspeth, may we feed your habit, albeit a good one, for awhile. You will be that new blood that we always wonder how it will change the discussion. There are some genuinely purposeful and insightful conversations to be had for the taking.

A sense of humor helps the material sometimes, too. Now that you're here, don't go away.

Definitely Welcome Elspeth! I completely agree about the blank looks. I am also catching up and look forward to many conversations about being, time, space and everything (none of which hopefully will have an end product of 42).

    Thanks for the welcome everyone.

I think I'm going to like it here. What I need is some recommendations for the next book I read - I failed to finish 'Brief History of Time' as I'm not quite as up on the technicalities as I'd like to be but I loved 'Cosmos'. All suggestions are welcome....

I recommend you read the Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea by Charles Seife

    Hi Els,

When I was in sixth grade my instructor made me write out three pages of the dictionary to be handed in the next day everytime I crossed the proverbial line. Over the course of the year I became quite the linguist. I wrote out the entire little blue Oxford English Dictionary. It's the most useful academic experience I ever had. I use an old Funk & Wagnall's now for reference just for the heck of it. I bought it from a supermarket in '76. We're trying to develop our own theories of the TOE, but I highly encourage pilfering whatever texts you can get your hands on from whatever sources of academia. Mine have served me well over the years!

Like you said almost everybody came across this site as an accident but I believe you will enjoy it even though I think I'm the newest member.
