Hi folks, I am new member, so I thought I'd give a bit of background of my perspectives on a TOE. I am interested in the concept that all the measurements of the universe have pretty much been done; we have collected all the pieces of the jigsaw, and all that remains to do now is to formulate a theoretical conceptual framework that allows the pieces of the jigsaw to start to come together. I am currently working on such a framework that I will hope to put on this site sometime soon. Essentially, the current accepted conceptual framework is inflationary big bang theory and string theory, so using these examples, I will try and highlight my point.
String theorists are essentially telling us that we can observe 3-dimensions of space and one of time, but that there are a further 7 dimensions curled up so tight that we cannopt perceive them. What I would say here is that, although we should not question the mathematical analysis that gives us 11 dimensions, we should question the conceptual framework that the physicists and mathemeticians are telling us, as it is this part of their theory which is based upon nothing more that logical deduction. In other words, there is no mathematical basis or evidence explaining why 7 dimensions are curled up and impereceivable, so maybe this should be interpreted as an opportunity for us to come up with an alternative coneptual framework.
General relativity is another great example of solid mathematics that can be used to give perfect results, but which has a questionable theoretcial framework. For example, the mathematics may not be describing a curvature of space, but a charging of space (this is just an example). It could be this charging (where the level of charge of space is proportional to the mass of the object, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the centre of the object. Essentially this means that Einsteins GR is mathematically correct, but ultimately philosophically flawed. My hypothesis here is that if the conceptual framework of GR, or string theory was correct, then surely we would be able to decipher the gravitational constant, or find a unification theory for the four fundamental forces, or find a reason for the mathematical need for dark matter, dark energy etc etc. With a correect framework for a TOE we should be able to answer questions like why is the speed of light 300000m/s. I believe a TOE to be successful will not challenge physics in terms of our current body of knowledge, but will provide us with a paradigm shift that allows us to find out the very things that we take for granted.
That what I'm working on. Hopefully I'll have a couple of essays detailing my appraco withijn the next couple of weeks. I would be particularly interested in exchanging ideas with people who have a good mathematcial/physics base as I have a few ideas which I am having trouble investingating as my level of mathematical understanding is quite poor. Look forward to liasing with you folks on a few things in the near future!
