    Hi peeps

    Hi peeps

    I'm Chris and I'm interested in everything. I found the site through Science Daily.

    I think Haldane's Law just about sums it up: "The universe is not only stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine". Not to say this means that we're all on a wild goose chase here, it's just fun trying!

    Have I written anything that might help? Not yet!

    Hi Christina;
    Welcome to ToeQuest.

    I tend to look at it just the opposite. The universe is NOT as strange as everyone in science today seems to be imagining. Complexity pays better though; simplicity is cheap.

    Re: Hi peeps

    Hi there

    and thanks for replying so quickly!

    It seems you have a different interpretation of Haldane's Law to me: my take on it is that the human brain is so limited that we cannot hope to know everything about the universe. It's not that the universe is too complex: and I suppose I agree with the "it's all in the mind" bit - our minds are just not good enough.

    Doesn't stop us having fun discussing it though!

    Hi Chris;

    They once thought man's mind couldn't handle driving faster than 60 mph. This of course was before we were able to drive faster than 60 mph.

    I think we'll find the most complex thing in this universe is life and specifically the human mind. The rest, piece of cake.

    This is from the brains that brought to us, genetic engineering, lasers, computers, TV, cloning, electricity, and a whole buch of good to not so good ideas.

    I'm convinced that we ( the human race ) will come up with the TOE, though we may have to go beyond physics ( i.e. metaphysics ) for a complete solution.

    I would like to see it in my lifetime, but that might be overly optimistic.

    Welcome Chris to the forum.

    Best ,

    Pat

    Welcome to TOE, Chris - hope you get as much enjoyment from ToeQuest as I have. Haldane's a pretty interesting guy; He also [In 1923 in a talk given in Cambridge, Haldane, foreseeing the exhaustion of coal for power generation in Britain] proposed a network of hydrogen-generating windmills. This is the first proposal of the hydrogen-based renewable energy economy. [from Wikipedia]

    I also found that Haldane's actual statement was:
    "My own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose."[4] Haldane is sometimes misquoted as saying, "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine" which should be attributed to Arthur Stanley Eddington.[5]
    [also Wikipedia]

    So who copied who? I have a feeling Eddington stole it from Haldane, because Haldane was obviously brilliant at off-the-wall quotes, like my favorite:

    'He is famous also for the (possibly apocryphal) response he gave when some theologians asked him what could be inferred about the mind of the Creator from the works of Creation: "An inordinate fondness for beetles".[3]' [also Wikipedia].

    Jeff
