The Yukon is a large territory, Whitehorse a small city, and the outlying communities and 'suburbs' of Whitehorse are also small, so we have a strong sense of neighbourhood throughout the Yukon.
Interesting, that because most of the Federal Transfer Money, (which is our main economic engine, followed by mining and tourism) comes to Whitehorse, which also holds most of the City, territorial and federal government jobs, there is a powerful sense of disenfranchisement from 'The City'.
Each community and suburb is quite neighbourly, yet all are in competition for the resource management access and transfer funds.
If we encounter this type of difficulty in making a system work, when there are only 30,000+ people in the whole territory, then restructuring the global fiscal paradigm is going to be challenge.
One other thought comes to mind: There has been a considerable influx of the undesirable elements of drugs and crime in recent years.
We have a rising homeless population, directly related to same.
It occurs to me, that while rational and intelligent people are striving very hard to improve the situation, there is a considerable percentage of the population who are going to continue to live outside of any system envisaged.
Since I have been working nights, I see a lot more of the 'night life' in this city, and it's not very pretty. An ambulance was loading someone on a stretcher as I arrived at work, from a building adjacent, where overdose and violence is a regular occurence.
There is a lot of financial aid, rehabilitation and accomodation being provided, yet the situation does not seem to improve.
Our front page story this week was on the impact of a national label mouthwash that many are consuming for it's high alcohol content, and the serious harm, including death, that can occur from this form of substance abuse. In our store, the pure vanilla used in baking, is kept locked behind the counter.
One cannot legislate against all of the means by which people can chose to harm themselves.
It is a very daunting situation that we are facing, locally, regionally and globally.
Interesting comments from all on this thread.
