Evidence that inanimate/animate is a perceptual difference

    .

This thread is for experimental evidence regarding the division or non-division between the inanimate and the animate.

The paper describes, for the first time, a simple molecule that each time it chemically reacts with a surface prepares a hospitable neighbouring site at which the next incoming molecule reacts. Accordingly, these molecules, when simply dosed (blindly) on the surface, spontaneously grow durable “molecular-chains. “ These molecular chains are the desired prototypes of nano-wires.

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) –– An interdisciplinary team of researchers at UC Santa Barbara has produced a groundbreaking study of how nanoparticles are able to biomagnify in a simple microbial food chain.

9,10-Dithioanthracene (DTA) is the first molecule ever to be able to "walk" in a straight line by, in effect, mimicking the bipedal motion of a human being. It is an organic molecule composed of a coal tar derivative called anthracene linked to a pair of sulfur-bearing functional groups on either side (referred to as "linkers"), which serve as the molecule's "feet". When the compound is heated on a flat copper surface, the linkers raise up, alternating from side to side, and propel the molecule forward.

During testing at UC Riverside's Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, the molecule took about 10,000 unassisted nano-scale steps, moving in a straight line without requiring the assistance of nano-rails or nano-grooves for guidance.

    Anthracenes found in Space

They are also found in the interstellar medium, in comets, and in meteorites and are a candidate molecule to act as a basis for the earliest forms of life. In graphene the PAH motif is extended to large 2D sheets.

Exciting information was reported at the 203rd Meeting of the American Astronomical Society in January 2004 by a team led by A. Witt of the University of Toledo, Ohio, who discovered the spectral signatures of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene and pyrene in the ultraviolet light emitted by the nebula - potentially vital organic molecules for the formation of life.

This is a list of molecules that have been detected in the interstellar medium, grouped by the number of component atoms. The chemical formula is listed for each detected compound, along with any ionized form that has also been observed.

    INANIMATED TO ANIMATED

    Perhaps the knowledge of movement
    Makes for animated life,
    But, when did this happen?

How does one draw a clear line
    Between organization and not?

When, even, does the night turn to day?

The most interesting and potent things,
From the evolution of the universe to life,
    Exist at the blurred boundary
    Between order and chaos…
Life perhaps emerging in tide pools—
The shifting edge between land and sea.

It is all of the fuzzy realm
    In which and where things
    Have to be orderly enough
    To take form,
    But not so much frozen
    That they cannot change.
