Thanks. Last two weeks I have been researching at the University of Texas in Dallas Library. The bad news there are so many books on analytical theory of numbers that I have a hard time catching up reading them.

The source to first go to is the website of the Patent Office: http://www.uspto.gov/

Your search does not need to end here, but if it exists with them, then you know for sure you cannot patent it.

My latest find at the SMU library is a translated copy of Gauss 1801 treatise 'Disquisitiones Arithmeticae' which contains his contributions to number theory.
