Is not dim dimmer dimmest nor similarly near, nearer, nor nearest nor inversely far, farther, nor farthest. Dim is for dimension. Dimer is for 2 identical molecules or atoms or particles. Diminish is for disappearing extensive dimensional ratio.
Physically speaking, dimension is an intensive variable or constant that in a macroscopic system has well defined value at every point inside and remains for all practical purposes constant where and when the size of the system increased. Examples are pressure, temperature, density, specific heat capacity at constant thermodynamic volume, and viscosity. An intensive variable is the result where and when any extensive variable (e.g. mass) divided by another extensive variable (e.g. volume) to give the intensive variable of density. Another peculiar property of intensity variable is non-integrability. They cannot be added together to produce a sum.
Chemically speaking, a dimer is a combination of 2 identical monomers of identical molecules and atoms. But to say that 2 hydrogen atoms are identical does not necessarily imply that they always form a dimer. But in fact they do form hydrogen gas of H2 molecules. For oxygen gas O2 molecules help sustain living things while 1½ dimer O3 ozone molecules poison them. Yet O3 ozone gases protect the planet from harmful interstellar radiation. On the other hand, a proton and a neutron can form a deuterium nucleus. Two deuterons can form a nucleus of Helium-4 producing excess energy of thermonuclear fusion. If practical it is the best for initiating cold fusion. It is one of several reactions preferred by all processes of stellar evolution. Why it cannot initiates at room temperature of 72°F is one of the great unsolved mysteries of advanced science and technology.
Economically speaking, the law of diminishing returns states that if equal quantities of one variable factor are increased while all other factors remain constant, a point is reached beyond which the addition of more units will only result in a diminishing rate of return such that the marginal physical product falls. For example, eating food help the growth of height reached a peak constant, after that more food will not make the person grows taller but adversely make the person sick and die prematurely.
