It was the morning of November 7, 1940. The victim of an exponential standing wave amplitude increase due to resonance of its natural frequency was the Tacoma Narrows Bridge nicknamed “Galloping Gertie” for its unusual vibrations during windy days. The bridge collapsed where and when its modulus of elasticity (defined as the ratio of stress over strain) was exceeded by the moderate forces of the wind that resonated with the bridge’s restoring forces. At this time, Galloping Gertie was opened to the public for only four months. However, the 42 miles per hour wind packed with matching isothermal conditions and standing wavelength started to create a node at the center of the bridge abutted by two opposite antinodes, one on each tower of the suspended deck. Unfortunately, the length of the bridge matches one full wavelength of its designed frequency as a fundamental harmonic of all wave motion. Continued oscillations at the fundamental harmonic caused the wave amplitude to increase by constructive interference and consequently the external kinetic energy can exceed the total conserved energy, which is its internal kinetic energy plus its internal potential energy. The only casualty of this engineering disaster was a dog named “Tubby” left in a car abandoned by its owner who narrowly escaped.

Likewise, 13 billions of year or so, the resonance of the fundamental harmonic of the space-time continuum caused the big bang expansion of the physical universe. Hypothetically, if the fundamental wavelength of the space-time continuum is defined as the Planck length then the natural universal frequency is given by dividing the speed of light with the Planck wavelength with a value of about 3x10 Hz or cycles per second of time. Its reciprocal gives the order of the Planck time. Resonating at this universal frequency by a given quantum Planck wavelength will trigger another big bang explosion and subsequently the birth of a brand new baby universe. This idea of quantum cosmology becomes the third alternative theory for the origin of the cosmos.
