The Cauchy criterion is useful in advanced analysis of the theory of infinite series, because it can be applied to many sequences of partial sums {S(n)} in which S(n) are not real numbers. However, if S(n) are real numbers then it is possible to show that the principle of monotone convergence also implies Cauchy criterion.
