    Brain Matter

    What elements make our brains? I know our blood has iron and bones calcium but what is the composition of brains?

    Hi Sillysally;

    A little research I did:

    The most common chemical elements in the human body are oxygen (65 percent by mass), carbon (18 percent), hydrogen (10 percent), nitrogen (3 percent), calcium (1.5 percent), and phosphorus (1 percent) (Harper, Rodwell, and Mayes 1977). These six elements make up 99 percent of the mass of the human body. Potassium (0.35 percent), sulfur (0.25 percent), sodium (0.15 percent), and magnesium (0.05 percent) are the next four most common elements. Ten elements only combine for about 0.7 percent of the human body's mass: iron, copper, zinc, selenium, molybdenum, fluorine, chlorine, iodine, manganese, and cobalt. Trace elements that have been identified include lithium, strontium, aluminum, silicon, lead, vanadium, arsenic, and bromine.
    The most common chemical compound in the human body is water, with cells having between 65 percent and 90 percent by weight. Four other common compounds are carbohydrates (such as glucose or starch), lipids (fats), nucleic acids, and proteins. These last four all include the element carbon

    The brain is made up of nerve tissue.

    Best to you,

    Pat

    Well Sally if you are female, ( surgar and spice and everything nice ), and if you are a male, ( frogs and snails and puppy dog tails ).

    Or if you like;
    Nervous tissue is the fourth major class of vertebrate tissue. The function of the nervous tissue is in communication between parts of the body. It is composed of neurons, which transmit impulses, and the neuroglia, which assist propagation of the nerve impulse as well as provide nutrients to the neuron.
    All nervous tissue of an organism makes up its nervous system, which may include the Brain, Spinal Cord, and nerves throughout the organism.

    Your next question is going to be what are neurons made up of?

    Best to you,

    Pat

    lol, thanks. I've always thought it was made up of some kind of elements. Maybe they just aren't identifiable yet. Can we grow brains outside of our bodies? I think skin tissue can be grown and if brain is a kind of tissue, maybe in the future we can have brain transplants. I think that would be really cool, not to transplant into a body but as a means to understanding the brains entirety and functions.

    Hi Sally;

    I'm sure with genetic engineering, clones, symbionic implants, organ harvesting, etc etc. it's a given.

    My guess is, that the biggest component of the brain, would be water

    Best,

    Pat

    Re: Brain Matter

    Haha, it's also called brain freeze, when you eat something cold. Ewe, that reminds me of those ancient people found frozen, I wonder what kind of condition their brains were in after being frozen for hundreds of years.

    I think a brain can survive without a body, it won't be able to communicate what it knows. It would need to be a part of some kind of communication device. It should be able to tell us it's own functions if it isn't a part of a human body. I sometimes try to work my brain into different modes when I am in a relaxed state, I don't know if it works because according to my IQ tests I am mentally retarded. But I think I can make my brain pulsate, at least I can feel it when I do that.

    Also if humans can grow brains, I think it should be in a gravity free environment because it will expand larger and be more functional then in a compressed state.
