A 'brain' is a concept that is constructed by the mind.

Dear Mel .... you have prefixed your thread with the 'science' prefix. This means that people visiting this thread will expect to read a proposal or theory within the Laws of Physics.

I have changed it to Unified ? .... because your opener is not within those Laws ? Or do you have some physical data for your claim ?

If so I will change it back.

OK, I might be able to agree with that if you mean that those with a brain have determined that the clump of graymatter in our heads is to be called a brain. The concept of our brain is thus given a name by which we can all refer to it. Is that acceptable?

I could see the brain as a virtual subatomic construct governed by the subconscious mind, with its concept being dependent upon how the conscious mind interprets absorbed photons. Perhaps similar to the internetwork of the worldwide web.

    Re: What is a Brain?

Let me see if I've got this sorted out:

There are some who are of the opinion that 'the brain' is a construct of 'the mind'.

There are some who are of the opinion that 'the mind' is a construct of 'the brain'.

The potential for a debate exists.

Okay......which side of the debate and who are the players going to be?

X-rays have confirmed that there is grey matter occupying the space between my ears, and my frequent schedule changes result in equally frequent displays of losing my mind, or at least misplacing it temporarily.

Guess we'll have to wait and see what Melanie has in mind for the direction of her thread.

    Re: What is a Brain?

The easiest way would be to remove a brain .... and see if the mind gets on with the job, or at least, constructs another ??

    cool bananas ... greg

I think we'd have to be willing to go pretty deep into the "matter" at hand. You have noted that the existence of your brain is confirmed by X-rays, and X-rays consist of photons relaying information.

My stance is that without consciousness the universe doesn't exist because the universe doesn't have its own perspective of itself. Anyone claiming otherwise would have to prove, while they are unconscious, that the brain and/or universe exists.
