The waters fine. Did you mean George Orwell's novel 1984 or George du Mauriers 1894 novel Trilby, about Svengali ( similar name ). Either case the topic sounds good. Our Founder and fearless leader Robert is the moderator/facilitator of the topics. I think the USA, where I'm from, went far beyond 1984. Before we were looking for Communist under our beds. now they have us looking for terrorist in the same spot. This of course justifies our government looking at our mail, listening into our phone conversations, monitoring our internet use; and just because you're not an American doesn't mean you are exempt. Well enough of this, I digress. I apologize. So best to you and hope to see your posts. Pat P.S. While referencing Svengali/Cvengali I found this, which, you may be interested in. | Re: Monthly Themes It is a great idea. As Robert suggested the expansion of the universe can be the first topic.
But how do we start?

Boundries of a higher, mundane, and lower order manifesting themselves in the material world and in our selves. | I second the motion for a theme of "control".
A strong body of evidence points to the brain/mind as essentially a "control system" with a "feedback loop" structure as well as a "reference signal" (see William T. Powers' Perceptual Control Theory).
Further, natural selection (evolution) is effectively a control system. The "reference signal" is survival, and the "feedback loop" is all of the interactions with the environment.
Finally, "control" is essential to the scientific method and our growth of knowledge whether it be expansion of the universe, the brain/mind, evolution, or a theoryof everything. "Control" places our knowledge into a coherent and useful system which can be utilized by others as well as ourselves. "Logic", for instance, is one of our tools of control and is fundamental to science and the scientific method. Mathematics is another tool of control. | | | | 6th degree Black Belt

| | Re: Monthly Themes Hi Pat, Tina, and Jak,
I think Jak nailed what I was was wishing to explore most accurately. It's not just the external controls which we create ourselves, ie. Big Brother or governments, but it's the controls or boundries which exist in our subconscious and at a subatomic level which concern me. Are they linked?
The labratory control theroy is an excellent example. As early as the 1970's it was proposed that sceintists actually create the results of their experiments and the results are not independent of the observor or facilitator of the experiment. In that case without these tests and results which help us to define the building blocks of the universe, would the universe be larger or smaller?
So yes in part my topic suggestion for November was meant to ask, Who's really running the show here, and therfore also to ask, without that leadership (internal and external controls) is another reality possible and would we be conscious of it. | | | | Orange Belt

Hi Pat,
If there is another Cvengali with a yahoo, blog I don't know of it.
I chose the name because it resembles my surname, and because
it has a mystical ring. Also becuse I think the historical Svengali has
the reputation of being a shijster \ a con artist. I want my ideas first to
have impact and understood then to be challenged and questioned.
Myself I question:
are these really my ideas, probably not, and in that way I am a thief like
Svengali. | | | | Grandmaster

| | Re: Monthly Themes Hi Cvengali; Control would be a great topic for the monthly theme. Fear is a great way to control, both internally and externally. I try not to speed because I have to many speeding tickets, and I fear the consequences of getting another. We try to control our bodies starting with potty training. I'm sure there is much, much more to explore here. Best to you, Pat | | | | 6th degree Black Belt
