Forum Introduction - 10-15-2005, 02:24 AM

Purpose
This forum was added to the Mathematics category to stimulate discussion of mathematics at a higher level of thought and abstraction. The focus should be more on the why of math, how mathematics relates to the physical world, different schools-of-thought regarding the nature of mathematics.

Background
Entire books have been written on the Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic. In fact, why not purchase one of these books and post questions here that come to mind while reading the book. From wikipedia: "Philosophy of mathematics is that branch of philosophy which attempts to answer questions such as: "why is mathematics useful in describing nature?", "in what sense, if any, does mathematical entities such as numbers exist?" and "why and how are mathematical statements true?".

Posting Guidelines
Your threads should generally be at a higher level of abstraction in this forum. For example, there should be less need for elaborate equations to make your point. So lets try and keep your posts high-level and, of course, philosophical in nature.
