Aldous Huxley, author of the utopian tract Brave New World, in a speech on the U.S. State Department's Voice of America, in 1961, of a world of pharmacologically manipulated slaves, living in a ``concentration camp of the mind,'' enhanced by propaganda and psychotropic drugs, learning to ``love their servitude,'' and abandoning all will to resist. "This," Huxley concluded, "is the final revolution.''

Speaking at the California Medical School in San Francisco, Huxley announced: ``There will be in the next generation or so a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak. Producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda, or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution.''

The Unfortunate

There are some remoter shores of human souls

There was an old man whose morning habit was to take a long stroll along the beach. He would pause numerous times along the way, bend over to pick something up, and then toss it back into the sea.

The youth of the village, idling their time in conversation and coarse humour, noted his custom, and one day the boldest of the lot swaggered over to him and remarked.

"Hey, Old Man! What are you doing, wasting your time like this, throwing those stupid starfish back into the water? There must be thousands of the dumb things, and there's no way a gimpy old dude like you is going to rescue them all. What difference does it make?"

The old man, painfully bent over, and then examined the starfish he held slowly from several angles, allowing the young man to really see some of the details of it's being, likely for the first time.

After several moments, he replied, "Your observations are correct, young man."

Then he gently tossed the starfish into the ocean, looked him kindly in the eye and commented, "It made a difference to that one."

Could depression be like osmotic shock?...biologically speaking.

The use of meds is my rebellion against hurting people. It does make a difference to me. I don't want to be like my mother.

My mother is slipping into a deeper paranoia. She believes everyone is out to get her and that her neighbor is coming into her house to steal things like her comb and her other neighbor skinned a rabbit and threw it on the ice to make her mad. She was so sure of it she went out on the ice to remove the animal...it was a fish.

It's pretty scary. Both of my sisters have had her babysit their kids...until recently.

I'm not sure, but it seems if things are left untreated they can get worse. I'm scared for my mom. I don't want to lose her.
