    Phiolosophy of psychiatry....

    Hello all.

I'm a first year PhD student and I'm working on the genetic tests that have been developed for mental health issues, such as Bipolar Depression. However one of my first tasks is to define 'what is mental illness'. I have looked at many different areas - such as medical texts, the bible, the media etc etc.

However I would like to get some of your ideas on the subject!

    Regards,

Hi Bank Nurse....welcome to the TOE. Have you checked out the work of Psychiatrist Thomas Szasz?? How can there be mental illness?? The mind is intangible energy, it is not an organ so to speak.

When I was passing through the process of integrating my consciousness I experienced an entire period of intense visionary fragments of consciousness, our society calls them schizophrenia but I am not a schizophrenic! The ancients called these fragments of consciousness Shamanism or the visual art or higher visual information. This period of high visual fragments just went away as my consciousness settled down in the process. Possibly if I had allowed myself to be drugged, my consciousness might have become trapped in those states.

After this period went away I felt that as a society we have greatly misunderstood the entire gamut of mind/consciousness/brain and it has led us to a whole era of terming ourselves as mentally ill when we are nothing of the sort....it is quite evident we are consciousness on and in many cycles and processes of evolutionary progress....

    Mikal,

I'm very glad that you took the time to reply to this I have started to research Thomas Szasz and I've found it to be highly enlightening! Thank you so much! When I have evaluated the data I will report back with my findings.

But please everyone chip in and contribute to this thread!

Well hello there bank nurse,Chris for short, your last post was about 3 years ago, hope it will not be that long again!

What is mental illness?Well that depends where "it" comes
to the surface,if in England where you are you will be labeled and tagged so to speak, then given medication to
take which is supposed to lessen the "madness"! However,
if you lived in Africa or in the south American rainforests
or even a native American indian you would be respected
and seen as a holyman,a shaman,so mental illness is really
a differing from the accepted norm, and either given medication or reverence depending on where you live.

    warmest regards michael.
    Humilty,coupled with boldness,surprises truth to
    reveal herself?

There is no evidence that the mind and all that comes to mind, such as thoughts, senses and emotions are not of the brain.

    No evidence; no TOE.

It is known that brain chemistry imbalances can lead to abnormal mental states.

Gee, thats a strange thing to say...only ended up in hospital once while passing through this process with my consciousness. Nothing revealing showed up with the brain (otherthan I do have a brain)...however, there were marked changes in the composition of my blood and in the electro-chemical environment of my heart....

    Re: Phiolosophy of psychiatry....

The blood and chemicals affect the brain and the body of nerves and spindles that report to the brain proper. All is intertwined and extended.

It is not strange, but true to say that there is no evidence otherwise for any 'intangible'.

Soul Jumping Brought To a Conclusion

There is a clear and powerful motive for us
To want to believe in a soul beyond dust to dust.
The soul is a potential lifeline to forever being,
A way to avoid the finality of death’s knell ringing.

What a great thing if there were a part of ‘I’
That could not die—a reward of pie in the sky!

So, we have a vested interest in soul theory—
And this fact alone is sufficient to account
For the belief in souls and an after-whence
In spite of a conspicuous lack of evidence.

Nor is the mind distinct from the living brain,
Upon which our memories and thoughts rain
And surface upon, a select few at a time that
Neurologists can observe deep within our hat.

Now if I was a Doctor...I would have to sit in front of you and say I'm sorry Mr. Torney but I have to diagnose you with "brain on the brain" syndrone..we can keep this in check for a while by putting you on the drug...Loperamide but actually the only cure available is for you to have a real experience with your own consciousness....

Sorry Austie...but this lady goes a heck of alot deeper than a brain and chemicals running around in that brain.....its a nice way to de-personalize us but it will never work on me.....
