Re: Some history of Western philosophy

Hi Dave. Never understood the incompatibility between science and religion, whether or not all that we know and/or are capable of knowing is the result of a single higher power/god.
Science a particular branch of knowledge or study which deals with a body of facts or truths, is a tool of potential. It can be used to better understand then utilize purpose.
Religion a form of beliefs concerning cause, nature and purpose, is a tool of potential. It can be used to incite and inspire knowledge.
Always pondered what wonders could be discovered by their partnership.

    PEACE dolly

too mature for their age, we would perhaps not afford them the credibility of an elder of venerated years and experience.

Interesting that most children have a better understanding of beginning without end and forever than do most adults.

They have not yet become cynical.

When we can once again see, as if with the eyes of a child, we shall be standing on the bridge across forever.

Abstract and reality are not irreconcilable except that we make them so.

I saved this link and there was another really good one that I didn't save.

Words with many definitions and their relationship to other words...based on our own experience and awareness... and their extension to metephorical uses....
"Our pre-analytic concept of the meaning of a word is not well defined."
If the meaning of a word is determined in how we use the word
then how one perceives the meaning is where the misunderstanding occurrs. So then if someone is cynical they will see meaning in that light.

    Take this for example~

“Hey, who’s that restoring the statues to their full anatomy?”

    “Melanie. She’s my Charlemengo—my assistant.”

    “She really exists?”

    “No, but yes.”

“And who that handing her the pieces in exchange for the fig leaves removed?”

    “Racecar.”

“Holy mother of Jesus; it’s like old times here. Aren’t they, um, fabricating some extra reality.”

“Perhaps, for they have to put some filler where it was broken off.”

My first instinct is that the picture isn't clear and straightforward, something is hidden. And that only registers after I start looking (why am I looking). I see 'giving someone dick which has it's own meaning. Fig leaves covering something up...fabricating reality...filler (added, unimportant stuff)...oh and feigned surprise.

Of course my instinct could be wrong and I know that about myself. I am sometimes cynical...I've got my reasons...as does everyone.

Some previous Pope had them all hacked off the statues and put into cases in a storage room in the Vatican. Mel stumbled upon them…

In light of this new evidence, if it pleases the court, I'd like to ask for an extension to better defend my client.

Re: Some history of Western philosophy

Who are we? Why do we live? Where does the world come from? How did the universe, Earth and life arise? Does God exist? Has everything which happens a purpose? Is there life after death? How the hell do we find an answer to questions like these? How should we live?

History shows us many different answers to every question we have asked.
It is easier to ask philosophical questions than to find an answer. Also today, every man has to find his own answers to those questions.
You cannot look up in an encyclopedia whether God exists, whether there is life after death and how we should live. But perhaps it can help to read what other people thought, if we want to form our own opinion about life.

Some believe this, others think that. It could be that one day we know the answer. It's of course also possible that we will never know the answer. But that the solution to the mystery exists. So even if it is difficult to answer a question, it is still possible that the question has a good answer.

Many old puzzles are solved in the course of time by science. You cannot solve that kind of questions by talking about it. The answer is left to the imagination of every individual man. But if science can make us know the answer precisely, it won't be anymore possible to believe this or that.

Is there actually anything we do know a 100 % sure?
The pronouncement of "Live by whatever you do know" is therefore not a sure thing.

Make a list of what you know for sure.

People are born; people live; people die, people have emotions, jet planes can fly, etc.

    Then list some probables.

    Forget about imaginary what-ifs.

Yesterday I was painting the house and my youngest was playing the world of warcraft. He was in hellfire and someone asked him if he was a christian. He asked me if he is one. We were talking through the window. I don't even know what that means anymore. My mind is racing as to make the connections. I can't answer that. How do I help him answer that? I told him to ask her if she was one. Anyway...she kept probing and he said..."I'm 10, give me a break".

Today I wrote about eating bread and it made me think of daily bread...and then I found this~

"Conversion is the miracle of a moment; maturing takes a lifetime"

    I'm still maturing.
