The Research Library

This thread will document my work on the continuing evolution of the ToeQuest Research Library. All members are welcome to post comments to this thread.

What is the Research Library?
The Research Library is where all of the serious research-related articles will be published at ToeQuest. The Research Library will use top-of-the-line components and will be heavily promoted on the Internet to attract traffic to the research articles and the website.

What's wrong with the current Research Library?
The current Research Library had several faults, some are mentioned below:

1. Authors could not upload and manage their own images.
2. No support for multiple pages
3. No pictures or biographies available for authors
4. Very difficult to edit articles
5. The vender is unreliable and appears to be AWOL.

What features will it have?
The new Research Library will have the following features:

1. Author pictures and biographies
2. Syndicated content
3. Supports a complete article series
4. Search engine friendly links
5. Support for articles ratings and comments
6. Blogs available for authors
7. Lists your recently viewed articles
8. Lists popular authors and articles
9. Lists all articles for a selected author
10. Convert articles to a printer safe version
11. Complete user-managed image support
12. Video support including Flash Video
13. Supports a "Read Article Later" feature
14. A top-of-the-line WYSIWYG editor
15. Support for related articles
16. Support for multiple pages in the article
17. Great vendor support!

Who can post articles to the new library?
The Research Library requires authors to go through an application and vetting process to ensure that only quality authors are registered to use the library. Since the library will be the first exposure of many to the website, we want to make sure we give a good impression to the world.

I think you all are going to like this one. It also illustrates the direction I'd like to go with the appearance of the website as a whole. I'll post an announcement to the Announcements thread once I'm done. Should be a couple of more days. I'll post a guide article to the ToeQuest Website Guide shortly and I'll include details regarding author qualifications, library usage, tutorials, etc.

Still have a few more things to do, like getting some more researcher accounts and articles moved over, and I'm working some minor issues with the vendor. The research library is live and looking good. You can check it out here. I'll add a redirect from the old library soon. Also, I want to register a separate URL for the research library so it can be accessed directly. One more item, the vendor is working on a major update that I'm hoping will be available in the next month or so. I'll update this thread when that happens.

I'll announce the library once I have a few more authors set up and articles ready to go.

As you may know, I purchased a Knowledge Base product from a vendor a while back and have customized it quite a bit to get the ToeQuest Research Library. The vendor is about to release a new version of the software, and it started its beta testing cycle only yesterday. I'll wait for the released version before upgrading and integrating it into the ToeQuest Website again. That should be within the next 2-4 weeks depending on how the beta testing goes.

I have done some redirection with subforums and add-on domains and have added the following ways to reach the research library.

http://www.toequest.com/research -- current method of access
http://www.toequest.com/library -- old library is redirected
http://articles.toequest.com -- the articles subforum, then redirected
http://www.toe-articles.com -- the add-on domain, then redirected

All of these urls get redirected to http://www.toequest.com/research. The main purpose of this effort was to create a new URL, www.toe-articles.com, that I can now submit to search engines and promote independently of www.toequest.com, without risking being penalized by those same search engines.

Also, you can reach the ToeQuest forums using http://forum.toequest.com. You just get redirected to http://www.toequest.com/forum.

I have just updated the Research Library to the very latest release. Here's some of what has changed:

1. Several security enhancements.
2. Several bug fixes.
3. Several control panel enhancements.
4. A Forgot Password feature was added.
5. Code was updated to be more efficient.

Most changes will be invisible to users, but more noticeable to authors and myself.
