Dear Austin. Much more died during two world wars; Russian revolution and Stalin’s purge and Mao's cultural cleansings. No clash of civilizations or of Gods! Fear of losing power and pelf brings sufferings to humanity (read poor) and have-alls (a minority) just sips and relax. It has been happening and will be repeated on and on, as we have imbedded in us the ‘genes’ of animalism, unless some conscientious people like you stand up and resist! It happens, I guess, when any kind of ideology decides what must be followed, neither country giving up on its own culturing, many of these differences leading to war or often rebellion from within. Power rules, or usually tries to, trying to keep its own people in place, as well as those countries nearby.
The next really big war may kill billions, whatever differences in culture cause it, or oil even.
Maybe we should just let the Gods of all the ideologies, including religion, war it out themselves somehow.
The President of Iran cited God a lot in his UN speech today, but I think he is really just a kind of mental case. I bet his continued stating of wiping out Israel will become the very cause of Israel attacking Iran first.
Austie....I watched the President of Iran speak at the UN and also on Larry king Live. As Larry ask him some pretty pertinent questions about the truth of the Holocaust, his statements about Israel and the issue of homosexuality in his country....his body language spoke loudly about his uncomfort with those subjects....
He kind of speaks with a forked tongue...out of one side of his mouth he spouted the need for love, compassion and justice for all people yet from the other side of his mouth he spouted "Iran will not be bullied, we will defend ourselves...blah blah blah...he may as well have said we will go to war....
Notice within the dilemma of war....it is the upper elite/gov and military who plan, strategize and execute war....patriotism, loyalty, bleed and die for your country is conditioned into the average mass of people....the average become the statistics of the war dead....its planners, strategizers and executioners die "old" with a chest heavy with medals under the accolades of a war hero.....
War never ends, Mikal, so I guess they have to think more about where they go after they die, but as the clerics pretty much are the government there, they have a good place in mind.
The population there is seeing much of the rest of the world on the internet and so their minds are getting liberated from the constraints. External focus may quell any internal strife.
Now, I always wondered about if women die as martyrs, then what would they do with the 72 virgins presented?
