When will the Theory of Everything be Solved?

I'm moving the original home page poll to the forums to be displayed again on the new home page in the very near future. Lets use this thread to discuss when a Theory of Everything might be solved. We might also discuss what the definition of solved is because it might have a different meaning for different people.

    Cool Am I wrong?

I didn't vote ,because I think you can never be sure of a TOE to be correct or to be more precize ..you will never know if a TOE is complete. It's in this respect the same as God. You can never be sure if (s)he exists. Not even when (s)he comes and speaks to you. It could be a charlatan ...couldn't it? The TOE will never be solved I think ,at least never beyond a reasonable doubt adding the fact that in this respect everything is reasonable. The question maybe should have been something like..."When wil there be a major breakthrough in science that'll resemble a TOE and get almost total support by the science-community?". (Btw I didn't answer "Never" because i'm not sure about that ,I just think that's the case.)

The basic principles of the Theory of Everything are already now found, but it will take perhaps another 10 - 30 years in order for the details to be worked out and accepted by the scientific community as a whole. In 30 years, most of the outstanding questions about a Theory of Everything will have already been solved and one theory will have become completed accepted as the winner.

I'll bet that it will be String Theorists that incorporate Mach's principle with M theory who will be the first to give us a mathematical unification of gravity with the electronic forces.

    When will this happen?

I'm not about to guess that.

    Cheers

    Impossible to say

Its impossible to say how long it will take to find the theory of everything because it depends on us. The harder we work sooner we get.

I just notice this thread, and after considering in what "moment" we are respecting to the finding of the theory of everything and I concluded that we have already discovered it, that it is the string theory, or m-theory and f-theory and that it will be concluded and finished within 25 years time, not more time will be needed to solve the most mysterious secret of all, and it is, all (everything).

Stephen Hawking said 20 years ago that the universe will be explained in a period of 20 years. He failed. But the string theory had it's first revolution one year later in 1985, and now it is in the second revolution. I read an interview in a newpaper with Stephen Hawking two weeks ago, here in spain, were he said that the universe will be explained in a 20 year period. Again. Let's hope he doesn't fail, and the third string theory revolution starts.

Brian Greene, Edward Witten and many other string theorists believ ethat theory only needs 30 years o be solved completely.

It's not very reassuring that people who "are supposed to" find the TOE name or believe in a certain time in which the TOE will be found. I hope they (people who are searching for the TOE in general ofcourse) make more sense in the rest of their thinking. Otherwise it might take a little longer . btw I did vote " will never be solved" now. That's because my partial TOE rules a TOE out and I stick with that..ehm...for now

Ed Witten came up with M Theory, to combine different variations of string theory--isn't that correct? I believe there is a fundamental flaw with everything. Don't we have to get to a point where mathematics don't fail, before we try to solve anything mathematically?
