They would have known mathematics. However we might not know how much they knew. In fact there was an astronomer in India called Aryabhatta who lived about 3000 years ago who calculated the solar and lunar eclipses accurately.

I think that here in the UK it was quite primitive 3000 years ago, while in the east there
were halls of learning and science. While the pyramids were being built,we had just about
    discovered fire!

It is believed that humans originated in Africa first and then migrated to Asia and then later to Europe. Thats why East had a headstart in terms of knowledge. Its a pity we did not leverage it..

We see it a little differently here,in the middle ages we were at war with Spain,as well as
France, today there is no war,but we consider ourselves different. However I do understand
that from your location it would seem that way!

In Asia we had three major civilizations, Chinese, Indian and Arab. We did not fight wars at that time though. There was a free exchange of information and knowledge at that time. Now it is a bit different.

The Antikythera Mechanism,a perplexing artifact was recovered by sponge-divers from a
shipwreck in 1900 off the coast of Antikythera,a small island that lies northwest of Crete.
The divers brought up from the wreck a rreat many marble and bronze statues that had
apparently been the ships cargo.Among the findings was a hunk of corroded bronze that
contained some kind of mechanism composed of many gears and wheels.Writing on the
case indicated that it was made in 80bc,and many experts at first thought it was an astrolabe,an astronomers tool.An xray of the mechanism, however, revealed it to be far more complex, containing a sophisticated system of differential gears.Gearing of this complexity was not known to exist until 1575!It is still unknown who constructed this amazing instrument 2000 years ago or how the technology was lost.

    How much more awaits discovery?
