Here's an old Sufi teaching story describing just such a situation.
A wise Sufi, transcendental, full of knowledge, was continuing on his journey of discovery when he came to a lake. He found a ferryman to take him across.
The Ferryman was uneducated, coarse and simple in outlook and appearance. So to idle the time the wise Sufi questioned the Ferryman in order to establish his educational and perceptional abilities.
These turned out to be almost nil. No mathmatics, no science, no spirituality, no finer feelings. The Sufi lectured the Ferryman on all the things, the finer things, he had missed out on in life.
The Ferryman became sad. The Sufi told the Ferryman, that thru lack of application and discipline that he, the Ferryman, had wasted half his life.
Just then the wind picked up, the lake started to heave and surge. Eventually a small storm appeared to be brewing and the Sufi became alarmed. The Ferryman said that there was nothing to worry about, as even if the ferry sunk they were only a few hundred metres from shore and they could easily swim.
Just as he said this the ferry started filling with water and it became apparent that it would sink rapidly. The Ferryman jumped overboard and started to swim to shore. The Sufi shouted that he had never learnt to swim.
The Ferryman paused, appeared to ponder, then shouted back, that thru lack of application and discipline that he, the Sufi, had now wasted all his life.
So Drift, take a lesson from the Ferryman, learn to swim, have a BBQ in the park. Have a beer in a bar. Take a week of from 'metaphysics' and party just a little. Chill out buddy and don't let things get to you again.

Austin,It would seem that intent willed the will, and that intent to "stir"(cause motion to arise)This intent seems inherit within that which IS the Very Life Of Life Itself, periodical
cycles arise and ebb,each arising a universe,cosmos is begotton,each ebbing a gradial
rundown to obscurity.

In this unconditioned NOW which is all there ever IS
The 'I' that claims to choose is only a thought, we have no awareness of our thoughts until they arise in our awareness.
Same with objects.
We have no awareness of them until imaged by the senses and then re-membered, re-cognized ..... [one with the knowing]
The subtle awareness of the sensation of an arising thought is not separate from the awareness of it.
The thoughts are the expression of willed intent it is automatic.
You do not choose to act, that has already been willed by the thought that appeared without you being aware of it.
To choose an act you would have to choose the thought that expresses the intent
one would have to know what one was about to think, before the thought arises
so who would do this?
No-body chooses anything in this already conceived conception.
Every-thing happens by itself just like the grass grows all by itself.
''Appearances'' are 'momentary' displaying apparent events within a specific character,
in the story as seen from the perspective of that character in the story in this apparent moment.

Here is one story that addresses the issue of the either-or dilemma with a surprising alternative choice. It comes from Zen Flesh, Zen Bones: A Collection of Zen and Pre-zen Writings, collected by Paul Reps.
"A man traveling across a field encountered a tiger. He fled, the tiger after him. Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself over the edge. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down, to where, far below, another tiger was waiting to eat him. Only the vine sustained him.
Two mice, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away the vine. The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted!"

The fish trap exists because of the fish; once you’ve gotten the fish, you can forget the trap. The rabbit snare exists because of the rabbit; once you’ve gotten the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words exist because of meaning; once you’ve gotten the meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words so I can have a word with him?

I like Walt Whitman—he took to the 'Open Road'.
Florida sinks, the everglades come and go, hurricanes arise and blow, shopping carts fall over, air-conditioning gets installed, humidity boils, old people walk slow in front of others, and the one known as the Drifter goes on as a miracle from a "nothing" or as designated by a "creator" or from evolution's hand, along the open road.
Thanks for being, Mr. D, apparent or otherwise.

To Be Totally Accepting If you are not, you will resist owning what you have created, and what you resist persists. Therefore rejoice, and be glad, and should the present circumstance or condition be one which you now choose to change, simply choose to experience it in another way. The outward appearance, the outward manifestation, may not be altered at all, but your inner experience of it can and will be changed forever, simply out of your decision about it.
God's Function
It is not my function to frustrate you or to test you. (Nor to punish you if you do not meet the test.)
It is my function to glorify you, and so, to glorify Me. For only in the glory of you will the glory of Me be found. Only through the wonder of you will the wonder of Me be made known.
The New Revelations
Neale Donald Walsch
Pages 81-82
To Be Totally Accepting
Remember, this is what you are after. You are not concerned with outer appearances, only with your inner experience. Let the outer world be what it is. Create your inner world as you would have it be. This is what is meant by being in your world, but not of it. This is mastery in living.
Friendship With God
~Neale Donald Walsch

On this day of your life, dear friend, I believe God wants you to know...
....that impatience will get you nowhere, fast.
If you insist on being in a hurry, you'll move very
quickly -- and often get nowhere. Take a breath.
Relax. Find your peace.
Don't require the Universe to move more rapidly
than it is. It is actually working perfectly, and it
will prove that to you if you will give it a chance.
Really. Trust me on this.
Love, Your Friend....
