My remark was directed toward the extraneous possessions that have a tendency to creep up on us, over time. Things we may buy, find, receive, collect, keep in case needed again etc. Without realizing it, we end up using a lot of our energy and resources in the maintenance of possessions. Taking stock of those items which serve us, and which we are in the service of, can be very helpful in restoring a sense of balance, order and empowerment to our lives.
The body fares better and generally lasts longer if we do not overburden the bone structure we have inherited.
You raise an excellent comment in mentioning dogma. Entrenched ways of thinking are the most difficult to divest ourselves of, and are often the reason that we may accumulate possessions or become less healthful than is our potential.
House-keeping of the mind, then, should be the first priority, as it sets all else in motion.

So how do we convince a pack rat to do otherwise? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsive_hoarding

Within certain parameters, we don't.
If the actions of an individual are violating zoning regulations, or putting others at risk, there are by-laws and regulations which may be enforced , be it a health, fire or animal concern as some possibilities.
In my own community, one old gent was a pack rat of long standing. When he died, his dwelling and the majority of the contents thereof were bulldozed and burned, and the remnants taken by dump-truck to the landfill. There was no other means of reclamation.
The local volunteer fire department was on standby and did the actual burning, using the exercise as training, to the benefit of the community.

Convincing… I find the problem lays in a person’s belief pattern. What some one believes can be set by experience or by conditioning. Both of these take a period of time. However one can live a lifestyle and never believe in what they are doing.
To believe or be convinced might require more then just knowing what your talking about, you need to know what the other knows or believes as well..
I cant always convince people of efficiency.. What might save one work now may create more latter. and visa versa… Sometimes perspectives become lodged/ rutted because there is not a good enough reason.. even if reason is sound..
An interesting topic..

Memory management came to mind. Could this be related to physical or environmental management of one's life? Some people are proficient being multitasking and they are bored whenever they are forced into a routine of repeated action and reaction.

There are studies that conclude that how we organize our living and office space is reflective of how we structure and organize our thoughts, and also indicative of our personality and certain other preferences.
In selecting our partner, and even our employment situation, this simple observation will be significant in determining how satisfied you will be in a given situation, as much of our interaction involves the exchange of information, of one sort or other.
Compromise is usually required, and the more persons involved, the greater the variation on organizational themes and schemes.
Certainly, many corporations and governments endeavor to utilize one standard system of organization, with varying degrees of success as people have differing interpretations of any system or set of directions.
This is one area where computer filing can be advantageous, if there is a 'search' retrieval system, able to search title and body for key words.
People think and relate ideas in remarkably different ways, lol............
“A filer is a person who organizes information using a rigid structure, and a piler is someone who maintains a mostly unstructured information organization.” [From Surviving the Information Explosion: How People Find Their Electronic Information (pdf)]
Google Docs & Spreadsheets now offer folders for those people who want to explicitly organize their online files rather than relying on search. Duncan Riley of TechCrunch calls for Gmail to include folders too. He’s a filer.
Simplified, filers rely on folders to find things they want while pilers rely on search. Actually, according to the study referenced above, people of both types often use an “orienteering” strategy to find what they need, using little bits of context and what they remember about where the desired information is to guide them step by step towards their target.
As I’ve gotten better at using search and as search has itself gotten better, I find myself relying less and less on folders or on Gmail’s labels. Filing just takes too much thought and work without a payoff later for me. Besides, it seems a holdover from our physical desktops. Maybe we won’t need folders once our computers do a better job of keeping track of what we’ve done, sorting out what’s relevant from what’s not, and paying attention to what sort of things we look for.

So what your both saying is that the way to convince or change a belief structure is to understand a persons Phycological disposition. For most how they manage their memory, as it reflects how they manage their life?
I never really considered that.. Yet some how something else seems to be intervening.. I'll have to think about it more..
Its interesting because our bodies manage our chemical processes, not necessarily our own thought processes. A particular way of thinking might lead to an efficiently run chemical process of the brain, but have we really found that threw trial and error rather then modern scientifically done studies? That and every physiological difference would require a different way of thinking, seeing as how our bodies are made up and use only a certain amount of chemicals that range is limited. Yet I wonder why we see soo many differences...
Should it also deal with the current structure of the brain as well? a.e. Some one is brought up in another environment moves and takes on another environment.. Either the process of thinking becomes complicated or simplified.. Really interesting to think about.. There arises allot of complications to convincing some one.. as it involves how they think, what they eat, also where they are or stand in their current life or ecology.
Humm fun topic thank you..

You touch on another interesting point in communication, and that is 'Food'.Really interesting to think about.. There arises allot of complications to convincing some one.. as it involves how they think, what they eat, also where they are or stand in their current life or ecology.

Food is central to all cultures. Everyone needs to eat.
There is much symbolism behind food, how it is prepared and with whom we share it ......
Historically, we only break bread with people whom we wish to be allied.
Makes sense. When one is uncomfortable or anxious, one is usually lacking an appetite.

In certain respects, I have to agree that what we are depend on what we eat. Personal observations suggested that a staple diet of eating rice provides more mental alertness while eating potatoes provides more physical strength.
