Preceded by the petroleum industry, weapons manufacture is the second most wealthy of all enterprises in the world.

The proliferation and application of small arms varies from the Olympics, to the American field of sports and hunting for the acquirement of food, to the instrument of criminal behaviour.

As firearms go hand in hand with sports and food, likewise to they go hand in hand with crime.

As pyrotechnic projectile throwers go hand in hand with crime, so too do they go with illegal drugs and a panorama of mental disorders.

As the panorama of mental disorders go with guns and drugs, so too are they accompanied by violence as the recreational entertainment industry. (Natural Born Killers, Just Shoot Me, specious super-violence as entertainment on TV.)

Video games with the objective of murdering as many people as possible before escaping the building and/or committing suicide.

Gothic blood cults.

The death knell of law, order and innocence.

As a person sees, hears, thinks and says, so too will many people act out.

The above - symptomatic - information is but a thumbnail sketch of bygone events as well as those inevitabilities of the future.

It is not a question of whether or not there will be more incidents, it is a question of when and where and to what degree ‘next time’.

By no means is this problem confined to violence in schools, workplaces or on the street - it is certainly and equally applicable to domestic violence in the home.

The controversy varies from ‘banning all guns’ (which is literally impossible) to allowing some citizens, teachers and administrators to carry concealed weapons (to protect, and serve).

The thematic issue here is what are the causes, effects and possible remedies for the - often denied - epidemic of accelerating domestic violence in America.

Good point Rascal. The USA seems plagued more than all other western countries with this sort of problem.

I'm no expert on the cause .. America, like Australia had to colonise land where there was no law. Or at least, they did not perceive the existing laws as Law. Therefore they relied on guns, rightly so. But now the time has long past when they should have been put away, a conservative percentage of the population seem reluctant to do so and are apparently skillful lobbyists and salesmen.

I have seen bumper stickers: 'God, Guts & Guns set this country free, lets fight to protect all three.'

Its like one of those drawings where you are asked to count up the number of deliberate mistakes, how many can you see in the statement ?

I think the simple answer to the fact that western societies other than the USA have less violence is that guns are illegal unless you have a permit. A permit is only issued if you have a demonstrable reason to shoot something. A farmer could possibly get a permit to shoot wild boar. A collector can get a permit if the gun has been rendered totally inactive.

Of course this is not a perfect system, but statistically it decreases crimes of violence dramatically.

While the USA argues over its citizens rights to carry guns other countries have simply banned them. It works!

Hi Tina, yes. If criminals had the right to kill at will, that would be equality of freedom, so I choose liberty, a repression of some freedoms, so all may enjoy reasonable freedoms.
