phase and group velocity - 04-16-2005, 05:17 PM

de Broglie matter waves are phase (pilot) waves and their velocities (w's) are given by

w=\frac{c^2}{v}

where c is the speed of light and v is the particle velocity. The superluminal phase velocity is not a contradiction of special relativity since the phase waves do not carry signal or energy. But the group velocity is equivalent to the measured velocity of the particle, which is always less than c.

This seems to imply that for a particle that is absolutely at rest, its phase velocity is infinity. So, if the universe has zero linear momentum it's at rest for all practical purposes and hence its phase velocity is infinity but its wave function is also zero.

How can something that doens't transfer ANYHTING be consider something that transferes things (a wave) and even going faster than light? has this speed been empirically proved?

the superposition of the phase waves forms the group wave and the group velocity of a particle is always less than speed of light. And it is the group velocity that is detectable by experiment. The validity of the principle of superposition assured the existence of superluminal phase waves otherwise the sizes and internal structures must be clarified.

What about tacyons,are they not
faster than light,in theory anyway?

regards michael.

These are faster than light but beyond our current technology of detecting them. Their existence can only be based on faith.

Time independence: [∂E(g)]˛=[∂F(a)×∂r(a)]·[∂F(b)×∂r(b)] and Mass independence: a(tr(t)=c˛

I have faith that they will be found, what about you?

kind regards michael.

I don't know exact the idea of tacyons and anyway don't believe in them. Something that transfers must transfer, just as a computer is not a computer if it doesn't compute.

I dont believe in santa-claus,but millions do,who then is correct?

Most people believe in god, but I don't. And yet, I can give better arguments against god's existence than any of those that believe in god can in favor. The 'most people something and less otherthing! factor is not valuable.

Nature doesn't go as humans opinion, believe, hope, invent, dessire or vote it to be. It goes by definition, and the definition of wave si something that transfers and transferation impplies information.

Just suppose for a moment.that a particle was
in between attractions, and at temporary rest, would that be possible, and further is there not room in the theory for a momentary pause!
kind regards michael.
