Classical & Contemporary: Newton is Here to Stay in Many Ways. - 06-18-2007, 04:47 PM

From Wikipedia.
Newton's laws of motion are three physical laws which provide relationships between the forces acting on a body and the motion of the body, first compiled by Sir Isaac Newton. Newton's laws were first published together in his work Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687). The laws form the basis for classical mechanics. Newton used them to explain many results concerning the motion of physical objects. In the third volume of the text, he showed that the laws of motion, combined with his law of universal gravitation, explained Kepler's laws of planetary motion.
Briefly stated, the three laws are:

1. An object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by a net force.

2. Force equals mass multiplied by acceleration.

3. To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

This commencement of a thread on Newton’s three laws of motion (in Classical Mechanics) is to serve as a reminder of their applicability - regarding questions and answers - to contemporary issues.

Proactive Readers are encouraged to apply their recognition and consideration of these Classical-Mechanical laws as they relate - often as they interrelate in combination - to contemporary issues, problems and solutions.

One exemplary question relating to Newton’s 1st Law, is, regarding the current issue of a proposed ‘pulsating’ universe (expansion from big bang coasting to a stop and collapsation, resulting in another big bang, ad infinitum): in deep space, what resistance is there to slow the expanding universe down and eventually stop it, resulting in a collapsation? What outside force acts on the expanding (and apparently accelerating) universe to slow it down and begin the proposed ('ping pong') process of a 'pulsating universe'?

What other contemporary issues are - or appear to be - directly related to one or more of Newton’s (singularly considered or combined) three laws of motion?

Regards,
- RP

(George Berkeley, 1710) ... lay the beginning in a distinct explication of what is meant by thing, reality, existence: for in vain shall we dispute concerning the real existence of things, or pretend to any knowledge thereof, so long as we have not fixed the meaning of those words.

"All things come out of the one and the one out of all things." - Heraclitus
"Reality is an illusion - albeit a persistent one." - Einstein
"Particles give me a headache." - Ibid
