Elemental Spectral Emission/Absorption - 02-17-2008, 03:44 AM

Just a thought; if indeed electrons transit around the nucleus, shouldn't we see relativistic doppler shifting as their orbit will have them either receding or moving towards us?
Shouldn't spectral lines be spectral bars of measurable bandwidth?

Finally, with some atoms this affect should be blatantly obvious i.e Gold atoms possess electrons that move @ around half the speed of light ..... therefore its spectral Ab'/Emission lines should be particularly broad.

What do you think.

So why is Gold the colour of Gold 'Einstein'? .... then apologize.

Actually I agree with Neutralino. Further Neutralino is one of the Einsteins at this Toequest Site. No need for sarcasm. Do you think one atom of gold would appear gold in color?

A little research yielded this:

The thing
about the Bohr model is that it's really handy to get you started in the
physics of atoms and to allow you to gain a mental picture of what's
happening around an object so small that can't be observed directly, even
with the cool toys we have these days. It is also convenient to teach at
the high school level since, with few exceptions, physics isn't taught with
calculus.

Best,

Pat

Perhaps, the above distance scales explain why the gold color is observed.

Also, would it be plausible for the electron clouds to be the result of the aging of propagating through all of the undetectable scales, similar to how the clouds of older galaxies are more spherical than than younger ones?

What I've said thus far in this thread is probably wrong, so I'm removing it to prevent any confusion.

Re: Elemental Spectral Emission/Absorption - 02-17-2008, 03:42 PM

Distance scales?? unobservable? ..... nonsense - my prediction: Electrons of relativistic velocities orbiting their nucleus will exhibit spectral line-broadening with regards to emission and absorption wavelengths. Perhaps this can be seen with high-res detectors?
I think I'll call it "Fivedoughnut Broadening" lol
