Money never gets invested without the opportunity to beget more, and this project has gobbled up a lot.

Who is most of the money behind the project? Anybody know?

all the better to build bombs with my dear, come closer so grandma can see you better.

Cern, we are mostly pretty decent cool geeks, that still don't get how what we do will be used. Eventually, you can bet your arse experiments here, if some haven't already, are used in some form or another used to make better military technology and protect financi .... democray, freedom, and oil.

    That the universe was created by another species in another universe when they smashed two lead ions together. We have proof you know. =;

27 Million degrees is also hard to achieve. I cannot even comprehend achieving 27 trillion degrees.

I mean, are they sure about that? How does one measure that exactly? And it's a collision, a small one, but there is a "bang" that lasts how long? I mean, 27 trillion degrees is no joke even for a "split second" and the 'macheens' ok? No partical size mega plasma beam holes or anything like that? That's amazing.

I couldn't imagine what a care would look like if, something the size of an electron or so, was half that temperature inside it for .5 seconds.

    Re: LHC (Large Hadron Collider)

I'm still dying to know, how we measure 27 trillion degrees.

The experiment created temperatures a million times hotter than at the centre of the Sun.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun

The core of the Sun is considered to extend from the center to about 0.2 to 0.25 of the solar radius.[32] It has a density of up to 150 g/cm3[33][34] (about 150 times the density of water) and a temperature of close to 13.6 million
So was it 13,600,000,000,000. kelvin??? (24,479,999,999,540.33 °F) Great googly moogly Batman!!! I really really doubt that. Something has got to be wrong. I mean, we actually have something that can accurately measure that or it's an estimate based on what?

Now we know why dip doesn't respond to your jokes, lol. But don't stop telling them because of one or two dogs .

I imagine. But we are talking about a tour of the LHC for god's sake. Amsterdam will always be there but the LHC, it could be gone in mini-big bang instant, lol.

This is a good starting place ... http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/20...lider_excerpt/
    "
In 1993, the U.S. Congress voted to cut off funding for what would have been a far bigger, more powerful project, the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). About fourteen miles of a planned fifty-four-mile tunnel in the region of Waxahachie, Texas, had already been excavated before the plug was pulled. Today that land sits fallow, except for the weed-strewn abandoned buildings on the site. Years of anticipation of novel discoveries were crushed in a single budgetary decision."

    I want my SSC!

The collisions that generate the high temps take place in space within the Atlas detector, I think. The tiny hot ball of quark-gluon soup cools very rapidly as it expands and so the detector itself is safe.

But I agree completely with your questioning the temperatures achieved. My guess is they are wrong . If they base the estimates on the temperatures after expansion and cooling, and then back track to the trillions of degrees, then maybe there are some unknowns involved.
