    Re: LHC (Large Hadron Collider)

Okay, so my kids are kind of nervous about this, thinking the world (as we know it) really will end in 2012 (Mayan Prophesy). It makes them nervous having to wait four years to see what happens and my youngest, nine today, wishes he knew nothing of it. Some of our kid friendly predictions are the creation of another universe and one that includes the re-birth of dinosaurs. No one likes the black hole theory sucking us up.

Will there be anything obvious right away?

    Re: LHC (Large Hadron Collider)

I don't think they'll find a Higgs Boson, partially because I don't think it necessary to explain the forces.

I don't think they'll be able to produce a black hole at those energy levels either, but since I disagree with Hawking about black holes radiating, it would be a little worrying if it could.

If Hawking is right, a microscopic black hole would only be detected as a unique sort of particle spray in the detectors, left after it evaporated.

If he isn't right, it wouldn't sit there eating the planet, it would probably fall towards the center of the gravity well, until it became heavy enough to be influenced by the sun.

Nasty, but not end of the world stuff, though I'd hate to get in it's way.

Hi Max.....I am not really scientifically minded so wondered if you could explain what you mean by...."not end of the world stuff..but I would hate to get into its way..."

    Thanks Mikal

Hi Val....I cannot even imagine being young and wondering about such a heavyduty matter in life. Daniel Pinchbeck says, " if 2012 is anything, it is a good meme to use to change the world, our society, the nature of our culture and our Global relationships..."

I mean even if it is true, what could we do if it wasprophesied to occur. we could agree to care, love and share all we could for the next few years as it may make a difference....

Thanks Mikal, well according to some doommongers we will be swallowed up by a
mini-black hole that will consume the Earth from within!

    Re: LHC (Large Hadron Collider)

I mean a microscopic black hole could only "eat" a certain amount of matter at a certain rate, so assuming it doesn't just detonate immediately (which it would if Hawking is right, it would evaporate it's mass too fast to be seen as anything other than an odd shower of particles in the detectors), it would be drawn down into the Earths gravity well, i.e. towards the center of the Earth.

Then it would "feed" more until it grew heavy enough for the Sun to have a larger influence on it's location than the Earth has, at which point it would probably "fall" out of the Earth, eating as it went.

It would be awful to be in the direct path of it, but it wouldn't be an Earth ending catastrophe.

That's just worst case scenario supposing they: Can create a Black Hole, it doesn't Hawking Radiate itself away, and there are no other factors preventing it from destabilizing itself.

So, not something you should worry about.

I'm making a note here: Huge Success.
