AFTER nearly 30 years of arguing that a black hole gobbles everything within it - including traces of its own existence - physicist Stephen Hawking has done an intellectual backflip.

Next week at a conference in Dublin, the wheelchair-bound Oxford University academic will recant his controversial "black-hole paradox".

It's an idea he first proposed in 1976 and involves the complicated physics of black holes, or dense objects such as what remains when some stars run out of fuel and collapse under their own weight.

Leading cosmologist Paul Davies, of Macquarie University's Australian Centre for Astrobiology, heard rumours earlier this year about Dr Hawking's intellectual conversion. "Evidently, something has caused him to change his mind, but he's being very coy about what it is," Professor Davies said yesterday.

Even the organisers of the 17th International Conference on General Relativity know little of what the great thinker will say or why he's saying it. "He sent a note saying, 'I have solved the black hole information paradox and I want to talk about it'," said Curt Cutler, chairman of the conference scientific committee.

Dr Hawking's paradox begins with the notion that the gravitational pull of black holes is so great nothing escapes from them.

Nothing, that is, except "Hawking radiation", the energy emitted by the gravitational field around a black hole. The radiation "erases" information about matter inside the black hole, turning it into the cosmological equivalent of "white noise", Professor Davies said.

When the hole vanishes, he explained, so does the information, violating the laws of quantum physics which say that the information can never be destroyed.

restricted only by the limitations of his personal vehicle. But before
man can operate upon relationships from Above, he must first break his
bondage within those relationships, and in part this is represented by
unlearning what has been previously learned.


It does not follow that all previously acquired knowledge will be
found false. To a greater or lesser extent, the Realized Man may still
be able to judge it correct. Its Significance, however, will be
radically changed, and He will be enabled to tie together parts that
formerly had been irreconcilable. He stands outside and above the
'game', as it were, and so is enabled to play with a master's hand.

Even though from the highest standpoint relative or subject-object
knowledge has been completely Transcended and no longer affords a
field of function, it does therefore allow that it has not served a
useful purpose in its time. Man builds a certain integration while in
the subject-object field without which recognition, as a self-
conscious achievement, is impossible. The training in subject-object
knowledge serves something of the function of a scaffold in the
construction of a building, When the building is ready, the
scaffolding may be and should be abandoned, for it ceases to be, in
general, any longer valuable. The man may now enter the building
which, in this case, represents the Transcendent or Cosmic
Consciousness. However, a scaffolding should not be wrecked while
workmen are still standing upon it. So the Compassionate Man who has
found the Building to be ready and then enters into It will also leave
the scaffolding standing until all the others have likewise left it

Is science and physics as you know them limited to the visible world alone?

I am always a bit confused what point of view the observer has. This is important according to special relativity.

Hawking solved the information paradox. You throw a piece of matter into a black hole and the information is not lost because of the emerging Hawking radiation. So eventualy all information of former matter gathering will come out in the form of Hawking radiation.

According to general relativity when one accelerates in empty space and (when the acceleration is really big) looking behind sees a 'black hole'. This virtual 'black hole' also has radiation, it's called Unruh radiation. But what information does it reveal?

I think it's impossible for an accelerated observer to measure the vacuum state of the inertial observer while in relative motion, and this would apply to Hawking radiation as well, to the tune of what is observed is more of a Cherenkov radiation going in and never coming out.

I liken it to analog-digital conversion where only discrete amounts of interference are observable.
