The Universe would be infinitely immeasurable yet mankind's developmental stages are possible to measure as to just what kind of weakness or strength will define the emergence of consciousness. Consciousness could only be immeasurable in the sense that the phenomenal consciousness seems to plague all theoristic attempts to define consciousness. What could be a possible flaw in our minds??? I would render a guess here that as Paulo Freire suggested, cultural invasion does exist and creates a flaw in human nature and the emergence of consciousness....

I didn't find your remarks offensive Mikal, I only have an aversion to measure, not you.

    Re: Measuring consciousness

When do we know that we are conscious? During waking or during sleeping? In a completely dark isolation tank half submerged in water, consciousness seems at its most acute point and we begin to hallucinate.

    Re: Measuring consciousness

Antonio....I am still studying consciousness and am presently following the work of David Chalmers who has authored an excellent book called The Conscious Mind. His argument concerning all the theories of consciousness put forward thus far is exeptionally clear and precise. It is in his opinion that most theories explain varying models of consciousness such as the systems which function to produce consciousness but he said we as yet have no fundamental theory which explains what consciousness is experience wise and its nature.

We have many fundamental theories, and I have the fundamental truth.
Einstien's relativity theories for example, and = is the truth.

    Re: Measuring consciousness

MJ....I am still studying consciousness...am into the argumentative philosophers such as Chalmers who has written an eye opener book and set forth truly pondorous problems which have surfaced in collective theories....to me rule of thumb in the TOE nature never gives up on creating our higher physical structures so what about the integration into the brain in our heart or the 5th brain in our system...in that integration lies the mystery of consciousness, the nature of consciousness and the element of phenomenal experience of consciousness and essentially the explanation of why consciousness functions....that would be important to be explained...that is what I am now studying...

    Re: Measuring consciousness

Is consciousness like a blackboard (a background) upon which one can witness the experiences (the figures) that surface on the mind from the result of what the brain interprets or analyzes (this part not consciously done, of course, but subconsciously—takes 300ms actually)?

That is, consciousness, a subject [only] is like the water of a stream in which objects (thoughts/feelings) are there observed?

(Although I label "mind" and "consciousness" specifically, I still mean that they are a higher part of the brain, of course, or a "global" brain state.)

    "Is consciousness like a blackboard"

Or more like a canvas Austin?
