How to Hear From God?

Most people tend to live on the shallow surface where our physical senses, thoughts, feelings, desires, and emotions are constantly being stimulated by worldly, carnal, fleshly ways. Because of this, we are not able to hear from God and be led by His Spirit, leaving ourselves wide open to fall for the many deceptions of the devil.

We want to hear from God so that we may be led to pursue the right things. Unfortunately, there are always four voices in every ones head at any given time; God's voice, the devil's voice, other people's voices, and the voice of our own flesh. So, how are we to be sure to hear from God with all the noise going on?

It really is very simple. If we want to hear from God, we need to shut up the other three. So, how do we do that? The first step is to distinguish each voice so that we know what we are up against.

1. The most obvious voice is our own and it speaks to us in a variety of ways. It is always telling us what we want, what we think, and what we feel. The Bible refers to our mind, will, and emotions as our "flesh nature."

2. Another voice that clamors for our attention is the voice of other people. They are usually telling us what they want, what they think, and what they feel.

3.The third voice is the voice of the devil. He is very subtle and speaks to us through worldly ideas and viewpoints that he has injected into other people.

4. The fourth voice is the voice of God and He speaks to us in our spirits. He does not speak to us in our minds. Unfortunately, that's where most of us spend most of our thought life. Again, the Bible refers to this as "the mind of the flesh" (Romans 8:7, AMP).

These are the four voices that we constantly hear and which voice we obey is based on our ability to discern. Obviously, we want to obey the voice of God if we are going to enjoy a successful life because the Bible tells us that we must be led by the Holy Spirit.

So, how do we hear from God and be led by His Spirit? Again, by quieting the other three loud voices screaming for our attention.

When we can find some peace and quiet we will be able to hear that one still, small voice, which is the Holy Spirit of God, wanting to lead us in the way we should go.

How then do we quiet these other voices and find some peace and quiet?

First of all, the devil is easy to shut up. Psalm 22:3 says, "But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel." Satan will have to flee when we begin praising God because the Lord inhabits the praises of His people. The devil is not gonna stick around while you shout "Hallelujah" to the Lord.

Just shout out your praise to God. Praise Him for who He is, praise Him for what He has done, praise Him for His promises, and praise Him because He deserves it. As you are praising God, you will not hear from the devil.

Other people's voices are also easy to shut up. All we have to do is get away from them. I realize their tapes continue to play in our heads, but if we can get alone somewhere and just focus on God, those tapes will stop, at least temporarily.

Our flesh is the more difficult to control because it never can get enough and is never satisfied. It is also the most difficult to control because it is extremely self-centered. Even still, Jesus said, "Deny yourself and follow me" (Mark 8:34).

Your flesh doesn't want to follow Jesus. That would mean having to give up many things. It doesn't matter. We are to crucify the flesh (Galatians 2:20). It's just a decision.

When you quiet the evil triplets, the devil, other people's flesh, and your own flesh, it will be much easier to hear from God. Now, that does not mean you will hear an audible voice, although you may, but not likely.

God speaks in many different ways. Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice and they follow me" (John 10:27).

Clearly, before we can know God's voice, we must be like sheep. What are sheep? Only the dumbest animals on the face of the earth. We must become like dumb animals, knowing nothing (in and of ourselves), being completely dependant upon God. This goes back to crucifying the flesh.

When we hear from God it can be something from His written Word (logos), or it could be His audible voice (rhema). We can also get His rhema Word spoken through a friend. Or, it can be nature, convictions, open and shut doors of opportunity, and the most likely, internal peace.

One way you will not hear from God is through your emotions. Emotions are dangerous ground because they are never consistent. They're up one minute and down the next. You can't make important decisions based on something so erratic.

Many times, you will not get a definite answer on something specific. The Bible tells us that we are to live our lives by faith. We are to step out and try things that we feel God is leading us to do. Maybe this will work, maybe that will work. We just have to step out see. "In the morning sow your seed; For you do not know which will prosper, either this or that, or whether both alike will be good" (Ecc 6:11).

One thing is for sure, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord" (Psalm 37:23).

Trust God for direction as you take steps of faith toward what you feel He is calling you to. It won't be long until you know for sure whether it was really Him or not.

Romans 1 18-20

"God said nature will testify of His existence."

God has given me two great gifts for understanding His kingdom. He has given me my senses so I can see hear touch taste and smell it and He has given me rational capability so that I can place that experience into a logical context.

I will use these two great gifts to embrace reality and to enquire into nature and ultimately, if He is there, find God. God did say that nature is the place where He we be found.

Science is the best enquirer into nature. It is no coincidence that science uses God's gifts as it main tools.

You are certainly right about the voices of others clamouring for attention. As for the other voices you mention.... can you sense them or have you been led to believe in them because other people have said they are there?

Very easy to answer? He will reveal himself to you, if you are of God. Revelations 1:3 clearly says Blessed is he who reads, listens and keeps what is written in the prophecy. Why is he blessed? Because what he reads, hears and keeps is God's words.

Hello, I don't believe we hear 'voices' and have to separate or identify each to hear God...but I do believe we have different senses, and it is these we have to identify to help us make the right choices to guide us throughout life.

You must have had the butterfly feeling in your stomach?
With me, as a child it was to alert me that trouble was ahead, and I learned this one while still a child.
It still didn't always guide me correctly because I had to then learn the feeling also meant it could be being nervous of something ahead rather than trouble ahead, and good news can be overwhelming and those nerves was trying to prepare me for the news.

I believe if we listen to our hearts, the voice of God can be heard, through our feelings and thought.

When I was young I used to pray, and I have always prayed. Not out aloud or even when others know but I do from my heart. I've learned that some times those answers come in the strangest of ways and not always did I get what I asked for....I learned that what we want isn't what we need and I received what I needed before the wish I wanted.


If a thought, feeling or somebody who was a stranger to you was to try and warn you of something to happen in your future life, would you recognise the warning or believe your own feeling or thought?

Many things that has happened in my life has led me to believe because of dreams, visions while awake and some really strange experiences.

A story I share to try and help explain this is when my son Ricky was a baby.
I lived in a flat with my two baby daughters and him at about 2 months old when was standing outside the block of flats I was living in at the time.
While there a lady, a total stranger that I'd never seen before, stopped me in the street and said 'Have you heard about the little boy over there who died of meningitis?' pointing to a block of flats which meant me turning round. As she spoke I felt what I can only describe as an invisible punch into the heart, this planting a fear that was to arise every time my kids got ill.

When I turned back round to speak to this lady, she was gone. I couldn't understand where she'd have disappeared to, not that quick. I shrugged it off and carried on with my day.

As said, everytime my kids got ill ( I had 3 within 2 yrs) I got what at the time I thought was paranoia, as if I knew one of them was going to get meningitis.
When my son was 7 months old, he did get it. There is no way I can sit here and explain it, and how the coincidences unfolded to only leave me with the impression of angels in our presence.

I was told he was going to die.
Trying to prepare myself for that....impossible!
I was standing beside my son as he laid in a coma in a cot at the hospital. His arm reached out to touch me and in the touch I heard 'I'm going to be alright mum'.
Again, thought was paranoia. Very upset and in a emotional state so presumed was that as he couldn't speak (too young) and he was in a coma. His mouth didn't move.

He didn't die, and I got told he would be left brain damaged because of the severity of his illness.
Then when they could see he wasn't I got told he'd be deaf blind dumb any all but he will be effected because of the medication required to treat the virus.

He is blind in one eye.
He is extremely intelligent and has grown into a healthy young man.


Another story.
My 5th child, Jo was in an ambulance on his way to the hospital with breathing problems. A baby again and I was following the ambulance in my car. I'm a mum with 7 children and had to sort them before leaving, about 10 minutes behind the ambulance.
While sitting at a round about waiting in a traffic jam I had only what I can explain as a projective image. I couldn't see the traffic on the round about, I saw an ambulance with the hood up and sirens flashing. It had broken down on the hard shoulder of the motorway on its way to the hospital. A seconds flash I suppose but can feel longer in remembrance...
I laughed it off with 'as if', lol

I got up the road, and sure enough I saw an ambulance with the hood up and sirens flashing. I parked up on the hard shoulder and run back to the ambulance and knocked on the back door. It was opened and there was Jo. He was ok, but the ambulance had to wait for another to pick him up.

What I never used to understand was why such a petty vision was given. He was ok, the ambulance had just broken down, nothing significant.
I believe it was a contribution to many visions that was to help me recognize the gift I have.

God can be heard when we listen with our heart, but most of us can't hear because we fail to believe in what can't be seen before our eyes or heard with our own ears.

Hi WW7…isn’t it strange how a person can be going through so much internally and nobody else is aware it is occurring except to notice that a person might look scared or anxious or troubled.

Can we be in the presence of Angels?? I strongly feel that is true because I have had an experience with an appearing and disappearing lady. I do think that has to do with synchronicity and how this experience is compelling to conventional thought and seen as incomprehensible. However, it is easily understood through temporal and spatial contiguity or the cause precedes the effect and they are united by impression or there has been a transmission of energy from the cause to the effect and it is realized through impression.

I get a strong sense from your personal stories that you are tremendously open and receptive to the more subtle energies of impression as am I. I think this receptivity is the principle that allows the enactment of such things as remarkably clear dreams that impart unconscious knowledge and the experience of visions we can witness.

Thank you for sharing your personal stories, its not always easy or even comfortable to impart to others the inner truth of our personal experiences but it is gratifyingly satisfying on a personal level because it clearly reveals one has attained a more complete emotional understanding of the way of their own life.

I thank my angels when I feel their presence and even though I had the stranger tell me of the boy dying of meningitis I have seen what I thought had to be angels yet not in the image of a human.

Somebody near to me was going through a really rough time. While listening to a song for the first time, I sent a prayer. I prayed for my angels to leave me and to prootect this person I felt needed them.
Later that night, and I really wanted this person to leave as was violent and unpredictable, this person was sitting in the chair I am now. While he was there, head bowed into hands many orbs appeared behind him like an arch, each orb separate to the next. I blinked to see if I was seeing things and sure didn'[t understand but thought 'WOW'

I so wanted him to leave but it turned out he kipped on my couch because the evening slipped into early morning trying to create some karma really.

In the middle of the night I suddenly woke up and sat up thinking 'That's why he stayed'....I had asked 'my angels' to protect him. For 'my' angels to do that he had to stay at mine. They have to be with me still but could protect him too.

Even today I think it is strange how I suddenly woke up with that thought, and it was when I realised the orbs had to be angels making themselves apparent.

It is the only time I have witnessed what could be my guides, angels....very thankful for them too.

I believe when we ask for help, the help will be received, when it is needed.

I believe I have gift, but not one that is any different to anybody else. I wish for others to recognize their gift because in my experiences it is the best guide offered to us...and we don't have to go to church to feel close to God, we don't need to preach to share our faith because it shines through the heart with the way somebody acts and lives.

Hi WW7…the experience of the lady who appeared and disappeared occurred throughout my search for two books, one out of print and the other simply not available in my area. You see I am a researcher and due to the nature of my research quite often the information I am seeking is in books long shelved by libraries to the basement holding center or they are out of print. So a search for me can be complicated by frustration which just invites “intention” which as far as I can see is a strong but subtle energy able to cross barriers and be understood in the spiritual from which we can get some unexplainable or synchronistic help.
In this particular experience I was in Chapters Bookstore, I had done a computer search to discover their message that the book I sought was out of print so I began to browse in the History section. I felt a light tap on my right shoulder and turned to see a woman with almost blue-black long flowing hair, and her appearance was so impeccably perfect it was like noticing all of her in a solitary second. She told me to follow her and she took me to the Philosophy section where I looked where she pointed and the book rather fell into my hands…I turned to thank her and she was gone. It ended up at the cash to be a paradox because the book was not scanned into their system; they could not explain where it came from. I was determined that I was buying this book and leaving with it so I bore myself patiently through a half hour procedure just to ensure I was leaving with the book.
They transferred the cash to another employee to correct the problem. I talked to this new staff member questioning her as to the woman who had strangely disappeared. I explained her completely and she said no staff of that description worked there and then she concluded it must have been a passing customer. I remained quiet because I had already examined the wandering customers which were not plentiful that early in the morning.
I knew what had occurred where I had received some help from the Universe so to speak because the issue I was researching was of particular relevance to understanding a tragedy that was becoming common place in our society. Like you I accepted the help, decided to stop questioning it and I moved on with my day.

From your description of a particular circumstance that happened in your life I see another commonality between us, the occurrence of people showing up who seem to be struggling through terrific personal battles for self-preservation. This has been a common theme throughout my own experience.

What about you? Has this been a noticeable theme in your experience??

Also I think through my own study I have understood that a "gift" is innately and spiritually inherited and is very different from a person who is creatively endowed....
