Dan Millman viewed (9) nine energy as the unconscious drive to live life from the higher principles of integrity and wisdom. People who work this energy in life teach through the example of their life for good or bad.
Dan viewed this energy as a sage walking down a dark road holding a lantern, asking the question; would you walk in the dark or rather follow someone with the light to show the way? "A life is a teaching."
People who work this energy positively are the best leaders.
People who work this energy negatively are the best fanatics.
Dan viewed (0) zero energy as inner potential resources such as amplified qualities of sensitivity, strength, expressiveness and intuition. This energy too can express positively or negatively or either remain latent and unrefined. It is with this enegy and the growth to refine this energy through which people have the ability to hold empathic presence in and with life. This is energy which must mature and can arise suddenly in the midst of a life crisis or emergency.

To discover lifepath being worked I will use my own birth as an example:
August 19, 1948
Calculation is= 0+8+1+9+1+9+4+8=40....4+0=4= lifepath 40/4
Because 4 is foundational energy which is very analytical in nature and 0 is the potential resources of sensitivity, strength, expressiveness and intuition I have a very, focused lifepath strewn with life tragedies and complex human problems and situations which drive me to feel my sensitivity, to build my inner strength, to feel at deep emotional levels and to slowly dissolve barriers between the material realm and very subtle dimensions of perception and experience.
The purposive direction of my energy which fulfills my need to feel meaning in my life makes me a server on behalf of people and causes I value in life.
(A good summation of my life on behalf of Millman who does not know me.)

The Complexity of Energy and Life:
Those working (1) energy which is amplified creative energy meet situations in life which challenge them to work creatively with their hands, minds, body and voice so all forms of creative expression from the least like making a cake to the highest level of the classical fine arts.
INNER NATURE--innate sense of insecurity and associated tendencies to feel uncomfortable and different or inferior where they battle to stop blocking, withholding their energy or channeling it negatively into addiction. Can struggle with weight problems even obesity as this acts for the body as psychic insulation against sensitivity to other's energy.
Those working (2) energy meet issues and situations which can catch them up into intense inner feelings of over-responsibility for other's lives and happiness. Circumstances arise which test them to use their supportive energy for guidance, help, instruction and assistance to others.
INNER NATURE--support energy leaves people learning about how to adopt healthy limits and boundaries with their compelling sense of inner responsibility.
The Complexity of Energy and Life continued:
Those working (3) energy which emits from powerful inner drives to express meet situations in life where they encounter difficulties such as speech impediments like stuttering, shyness to talk, the necessity to learn second languages and even to speak in pubic forums. While young they are easily identified as negatively whining, complaining, gossiping, badmouthing and criticizing. Their lives hold situations which are emotionally upsetting, people who criticize them and make them struggle with self-doubt, emotional dramas where they have to learn the difference between empathy and sympathy, angry, aggressive and people who get into distress all teach them about their inner emotional sensitivity.
INNER NATURE; the disposition to be thin-skinned emotionally, can feel states of frustration, struggle inner emotional battles with feelings. Can feel they are greatly misunderstood.
Those working (4) energy must persist through outer difficulties with charged family situations for example step-parents, death of a parent, situations which hold lives exemplifying instability, necessities may arise to move often and upset established roots.
They watch as survival stories play out in the drama of their lives.
INNER NATURE; predisposition to internal strength, vigor and fortitude in order to live from internally strong structures of security consciousness. They are here about the ultimate attainment of survival.
The Complexity of Energy and Life Continued:
Those working (5) energy in life are driven by strong impulses to experience the depths of their life, they meet with internal tests in the world. They face situations which hold the complexity of limitation versus freedom; injuries which restrict mobility, relationships where partners are smothering, financial pressures, economic disadvantages and even figurative or literal imprisonment.
INNER NATURE: fear is their prison, fear of committment, relationship, situations which are restrictive, total dependence on others to fear of dependence on others, fear to adventure so become attracted to TV, Books and Movies which reveal the adventure they are really seeking, they can fall into drug experience. They fear boredom, sameness, lack the ability to stay with things. They inwardly struggle with negative thoughts, fears and doubts to learn that human bondage is a state of mind and they are looking to live a simple, functional, disciplined life where they realize a healthy balance of outer self-reliance and self-sufficiency with a finely tuned active mind and imagination.
Those working (6) energy meet situations, circumstances and relationships in life which slowly reveal to them that they are idealistic, perfectionistic and judgemental in nature. They experience relationship failures, too strong attempts to please others so failure to live for themselves, can feel dispair over disappointments in life, they can fear failure, they fear comparison because they suffer with fears of inferiority, they can appear cold and aloof to hide inner hurt, they can be self-deluded into thinking everything must be perfect.
INNER NATURE: innate impatience, over-active imagination, internal pressure from high ideals, self-worth issues they must work through, innate fear to face difficulties in life.
Those working (7) energy meet situations in life involving hurt, betrayal and misunderstanding. They face issues of broken trust and all situations which force them to deeper self-examination to build strong inner levels of self-trust.
INNER NATURE: possession of a cell-level or subconscious knowledge which makes them suddenly discover answers they just know. They pass through struggles where they feel safer with their mind than with their emotional states. The course of their lives slowly drives them to see deep wisdom emanating from everyone to every circumstance. They are learning to trust and engage with genuine openness to the difficulties inherent within life.

The Complexity of Energy and Life Continued:
Those working (energy in life work from a subconscious repressed drive for power and influence. They meet situations in life charged with the dynamics of power which involves charged family situations which can be theirs, the one they create or other's families, they face working through issues with money, control, authority, instances of recognition, they can face abuse until they learn how to bring forth their own power, they can face employee, family or relationship disrespect and even contempt until they learn how to stand up inside themselves and claim their own power. Money stories can teach them about misuse or take them to jail. They may divorce at great expense, they may lose money or have it stolen to learn respect for money, they may gamble excessively to lose their fortune and they can experience "luck" and generosity of others to pass through respecting power or abusing power.
INNER NATURE: inner struggle between unconscious or conscious drives and fears which can play out through contradictory intermingled dynamics. They can struggle to deal with power issues and struggles either passively or aggressively. The course of their lives drives them to maintain the highest integrity in areas of money, power, authority or fame and influence.
Those working (9) energy meet issues in life that entangle them with the Law, police, courts, legal battles, lawyers, courts, conflictions with society, authority figures, situations that lead to either ethical or unethical presence in lifestyle and relationship issues.
INNER NATURE: inherent charismatic and magnetic energy and inherent higher principles of integrity which drives the course of their lives into the arena of laws which slowly teach them about higher principles of living. Inherent in nature is unconscious archetypes of sin, repentence, salvation and spiritual offences..(suicide) For these people their life is their teaching.

UNDERSTANDING BIRTH NUMBERS:
Example: 40/4
The numbers to the left of the slash mark represent issues, obstacles and opportunities we need to pass through and meet in order to reach the fulfillment of our life purpose which is revealed in the meaning of the number to the right of the slash mark. We engage in a creative struggle with negative or undeveloped tendencies related to our life purpose because life is supposed to be a challenge.
Millman explains that we resolve issues to personally evolve and gives the examples that follow:
1s-lack the confidence to be creative.
2s-lack a good attitude about life and the ability to cooperate or understand healthy boundaries with responsibility.
3s-have problems expressing their feelings.
4s-lack inner stability between mind and emotions and ignore process.
5s-don't feel free or look disciplined.
6s-have trouble with self-acceptance and with judging others.
7s-don't trust themselves or feel open to others.
8s-have an ambivalent relationship to abundance and power.
9s-have trouble demonstrating consistent integrity over time.
WHAT IS TO BE DONE OUTWARDLY IS FIRST TO BE DONE INWARDLY:
1s-need to experience creativity, inspiration and confidence flowing within them.
2s-need to establish balance and integration in their own psyche.
3s-need to connect with their own deeper emotions.
4s-have to master process to build inner stability.
5s-need to apply discipline to find inner freedom.
6s-need to accept the perfection of their own lives.
7s-need to trust self and open their hearts to life.
8s-need to experience an inner sense of internal abundance.
9s-need to find higher principles within.
No two people on the same life path will be the same because like the mountain is carved out by the movement of the earth, the wind and the other elements, we too are effected by factors such as gender, culture, role models, genetic heritage, family history, body type, values, beliefs and any other influences with touch our lives.

Taking the above statements and explanations to my own life this is how it worked out for me:
Lifepath: 40/4
(4)the first (4) represents the obstacles, issues and possible opportunities I meet to evolve.
(4) being foundational energy represents our foundation...our family. I had a difficult family history. Death of father while young, child lost in a large family, stepfather dilemma, family tragedies to face and deal with, lots of family moves and dynamic family issues. I have had to face and stabilize myself with regret, suffering, the complexity of relationships, mistakes and failures as all those in my life were bent to the precarious nature of life.
Foundational energy also represents how the structure and framework of our lives is a matter of steps in a process. I have had to understand that so many opportunities arose to encourage me to inherently capture an inner model of process which required me to master such things as committment, clarity, patience and following a slower path to many things I wanted to realize about life and achieve in life.
The middle (0) represents potential resources or amplified qualities of sensitivity, internal strength, expressiveness and intuition. As these qualities are amplified energies I have had to cope with when more or less erupting in my life I have had to learn how to stop blocking my own sensitivity to life when dealing with my own awareness level. Because living at a feeling level makes me aware of things like the environment of a room I enter or the moods and tones of people I am around I had to struggle to stay with that and defeat my own hypersensitive states. I had to first learn how to support my own life before I could help support the lives of others. That entailed passing through difficult straits to become physically, emotionally and mentally stable within myself. I realized through those passages I have incredible inner strength I can depend on to get me through the worst. Because my expressive energy can be amplified I have realized that I have a clear responsibility to align it with much higher principles. Dealing with (0) subtle dimensions of perception probably has been the most difficult part of my life. I did not collapse in fear, I mastered process through study and research to find alot of hidden knowledge that was forced underground throught the passages of time and history.
(4) or the number 4 represents the purpose of my life. I have many achievable goals which I can never achieve unless I finesse clear intent and focused effort over the course of my life. I know that my energy is kind of disigned in a way that I must constantly learn how to persist through the difficulties and problems laid before me in my own life. Attending to that challenge is purposive to me....

Of late I have been reading and studying the work of Lance Storm, a para-psychologist who wrote the book..."The Enigma Of Numbers." His work references how it is in the nature of the psyche to understand geometric formations and structures of numbers for restructuring the human psyche to a more ordered state of stability and organization. Throughout the book he makes many references to the quote..."God or the Unverse must be a geometer." I found that significant to Millman's thought system that we are on numbered life paths and that is how the Universe tracks us. This book is an excellent read and a very deep examination into the possible meanings of numbers as relavent to all our lives and the ongoing evolution of mind/psyche/consciousness.....
