one dimension means one direction with two degrees of freedom.

three dimensions means three directions with infinite degrees of freedom but only 6 shortest distances.

the choice of one dof is the same as saying chosing a time direction.

well my concept is similar, but I think probably my problem is that I don't have enough physics knowledge: what is the difference between direction, drees of freedom, and distance?

I think for me a dimension is a bi-directional path for distance. maybe path for me is what direction is for you and this last one is for me what degree of freedom is for you.

if the universe is made of one very, very, very long convoluted string then choosing one dof is the same as chosing one direction of motion along this string but the harmony of motion cannot allow one point to suddenly change direction and moves in the other direction or dof.

Then does it mean that probably the big bang was actually a collision of two (rippling) branes rather than the explosion of a singularity?

I think both things would mean the same:

collision of 2 branes-->explosion of singularity.

looking back at post#45, it can now be asserted that the concept of degrees of freedom is the same as the concept of shortest distances for a given physical direction.

So in your view a brane and a string would be the same?

branes have two intrinsic directions, while strings have only one intrinsic direction. Branes have 4 dofs or 4 shortest quantized paths, while strings have 2 dofs or 2 shortest quantized paths.

Human beings have 4 directions and 8 dofs or 8 shortest quantized paths. These agree with the eight-fold ways of Eastern mysticism.

So where does the argument that branes are actually a singularity stand?? I feel branes as well as singularity are two different conception and cannot be one and the same.

the intersection of three branes can be a singularity.
