In the beginning—no, wait, for there could be no real beginning, as this would imply a prior and absolute nothingness from which nothing could ever emerge. Note that an absolute nothing cannot even have any potential about it.
So, there must exist an eternal and fundamental ‘energy’ that is the Ground of All Reality. Call it the quantum foam, or superstrings if you like, but I call it Energy. This Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, for it is made only of itself, and is, thus, without a beginning or an end. All elementary particles and forces are made from Energy.
Energy, being made only of itself, is, therefore, the only noncomposite substance that is possible, for it is totally unbreakable, since it has no pieces. Energy is the ultimate source of everything, with all higher, composite complexities that we know of, including all mind and matter, built upon its flexible base. It is stronger than the legendary Atlas, who stood on the back of a turtle, presumably with turtles all the way down beneath him, Energy is, indeed, where the buck must stop, for there is nothing lower left to make it out of. Energy holds up not just the world, but EVERYTHING that there is. Energy is omnipresent and eternal.
This Energy IS the Absolute Reality, the Ultimate Ground of All Existence, the Mother of All Reality, the Eternal Stuff. This Energy is all that there is at the fundamental, bottommost level—there can be nothing lower.
Those who rightly refer to Energy as the Ground of (all) Determination (G-O-D., not GOD) are right, but they err if they take it any further by thinking of it as a person, being, alien, or superbeing, and, by doing so, ascribe personality, temperament, and such to it, for that would require even more composite and complex qualities than we have as people—aye, yes, very far from fundamental and absolute. Yes, of course, there may be higher beings, but they would not be fundamental and absolute at all, but composite, like us, and, as such, would not be the Ultimate, the Absolute, or the Energy—and they would certainly not be their own cause, being fully dependent on, and existing after the Ground of Ultimate Reality, or Energy.
Anyway, this Energy is a simple thing, being such a fundamentally low, but flexible, building block, but this does not preclude the possibly of it being very close at hand in its basic and fundamental noncomposite form. It may all around, but intangible, or be just out of the sight of our presently knowable energy spectrum, or be not in a familiar form, or be in a really familiar but unexpected form, such as our consciousness, but all this is only speculation right now.
Perhaps we have exceeded the capabilities of quantum physics in the search for Energy, a field once so promising, and, so, with no where else to turn, delve straight into the pure and intrinsic visions of mysticism and meditation, for, it seems that empty awareness is an intrinsic path to information from the inside, being the essence of, if not, the eternal Stuff itself in its spiritual (gaseous) state, and that the ethereal matter (frozen) state of quantum physics is but an extrinsic path, now at its limit, to information from the outside. Physics, once clear, becomes more and more full of fog and dust at its limits, as meditation, once a foggy notion, becomes a hope for the light. But, beware, being at one with the Cosmos, as meditation provides, and the dissolution of self that it provides may just be a neurological effect of the quieting of the brain areas which tell where you end and the universe begins, as well as those for the self. But, we needs some straws to grasp, for now. Any other ideas? Where should we look?
Meanwhile, what a world to enjoy! Our universe is the ultimate free lunch, our earth an oasis in space provided for us by Energy through Father Time, Mother Nature, and Guiding Stars.
Energy is the absolute fundamental substance___notice I said substance. Without substance, energy is impossible, as your nothing reference infers, thus all energy is of substance motions___thermo-hydro-dynamic substance/energy motions___the prime mover...

Austin; Energy is a term referring to a “dimension”; a quantitative measure and thus should not be used to refer to the fundamental absolute entity of the universe. Though this is a common vernacular use of the word, it tends to confuse the real issue. The more accurate term for this substance is “Stuff of the Universe” or as I prefer, “fundamental matter”. Prehaps energy is consciousness arisen and active,thereby motioning,the opposite would
be energy-less the motioning,and consciousnes at complete rest (stillness)
