I'll just butt in here to say that a Guilty Conscience is a mixed emotion comprising of sadness and fear....and those who feel no sadness or fear regarding their behaviour will not experience a "guilty" conscience. Conscience is arbitrary too

Both Adam and Eve found their naked bodies disgusting and wanted to covered them up....good start to "self hated" in my book.

Mikal I've been reading through your other posts and the "Live - Evil" is very significant in the fact that when we can "live" (in every sense of the word) and allow others to "live" (in every sense of the word) then we might all get life to the fullest.....

Now here is the tricky part.......if IGNORANCE is 'evil' why hasn't KNOWLEDGE of Good and Evil improved the situation?

I see the Tree as epitimising "Judgement" for the criteria for judgement is the need to have knowledge of what is Good and what is Bad....but I think the "Almighty" prohibited "Judgement" because as we have come to understand 'good and bad' is arbitrary.....just like their nakedness suddenly became a 'bad" thing to them....(but not originally).

Truely Drifter I find it so difficult to view Adam & Eve's related response as one of real shame for disobedience...especially in view of their readiness to blame others instead of accepting responsibility for themselves.

When they hid because of their nakedness....the "Almighity" immediately perceives the dubious manifestations of "judgement' and says "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree I forbade....".

Tina nice to speak with you...as a researcher into cultural history with 25 years of study behind me...yes culturing, cultured behavior... has been evident since culture began however it has very much ranged between culturing, enculturation and cultivating..the difference being enculturing for enforcement and cultivating for the development of the social self in hopes for, as cultural historian J. Pearce would say... "aiming for the development of a society with a capacity for higher human achievements..art, music, science, philosophy and astronomy." We are a society heavily involved in enculturation and enforced behavior...essentially we will go down in history as a society who drugged and imprisoned our young before they had a chance to take part in society. Not a good story....

Hi Tina...Ignorance is lack of knowledge...who says we have knowledge of good and evil...??? The scales have to fall away from your eyes...its called awareness...seeing deeper than the surface goings on..its called an innate understanding of the world and society one is living in..you have to wake up or as Christ said.."I will give you new eyes to see and new ears to hear.."

Hi all. My opinion is that the root of ALL EVIL is Belief. Read many but not all posts so hope that's not repetitive. Many circumstances are widely and commonly accepted, by a majority, to be good or bad. It's this action that makes it so. All the best Dolly

Welcome to Toe Quest Dolly.

It sounds like "choice" then...would be the root of all evil..?

Wouldn't that equate to "will"...?

Warmest Bahai Wishes Dolly,
D.

Thanks for your comment and welcome to Toequest from me too!

Belief is close but I regard it as the fertiliser of the root of all evil.

The distinction between culture/enculturation/cultivating is interesting and loaded with political, social and economic ramifications.....
