Ema:
The topic is "Should a TOE affect Religions". Religions are the teachings of faith, believes, based on historical writings and fables unsubstantiated by science. You either belief what the teacher says, or you don't, as proof is missing in religion.
Looking into "why religion was created", Joseph Campbell so eloquently points out the similarities of all religions, as in birth, life, death and resurrection, themes that were created to assure the finite lives of an everlasting "presence" of his/her consciousness after death. Moreover, the afterlife is one of supreme justice to right the wrongs one encounters in life, to punish the bad and reward the good.
Sorry, once you dig deep and look into the origins of man's mind, it becomes apparent that our self awareness is the root of creation myths invented to come to grips with the absolutes of death, the cessation of sensation
Should a TOE affect religion? It should exclude religion, that I am sure off, but will it effect religion, I doubt it.
Moreover, I am beginning to become convinced that a true TOE will never be found. Emergence, the science of self organization, points to a different direction. I see the pattern of reductionism reversed to the unpredictability of systems behaviors (quantum mechanics) until these systems suitably stabilize to survive. From that organization springs the known laws of physics. Random behavior first, then survival of organizing patterns to beget rules of reality......Just my humble thoughts of today, 6/19/06

I believe that science can teach religion a thing or two and the same for religion it can open up a new world for science. But the two are not listening to each other or don't want to. They seem to be afraid that the proof of one will make the other obsolete. I believe if the two would merge ideas it would enhance the beliefs of both. Religion has to let go much of the superstitions attached to their beliefs and separate fact from myth. There is nothing wrong with the teachings of mythology. I have learned much through the teachings of mythology. It gives an understanding of life that can not be explain literally. Unfortunately many of the major religious teaches (Christian,Islamic,Judaism) and so called theological doctors teach mythological stories as fact. Teach it for what it is, it may cause less confusion. If science would admit there is something unexplained in the center of everything keeping things moving evolving from the smallest to the largest existing thing in the universe. How this thing is connected to and connects everything in it. Out of chaos comes order which hints to intelligent design. And the age of our universe which went from 5 billion to about 15 billion years old (I think that was the last count as of today). But something strange happen, they found stars as old as 24 billion years. How can the baby be older than the mother, this hints to no beginning. Each of these scientific explorations have theological undertones. I feel a new religion can emerge not only from the collaboration of religion and science but all the major religions with science.

ToE will find---whenever it happenes, the theoratical or at best a mathematical model. When we talk about God or spirituality, then the concept of query is quite different.there we asking about the 'Existence' of God i.e. about the maker of the Nature. Nature& its creator are two different subjects.Let the scientists do their job and we should leave the spiritualist to their quest---not that their the goals of their quest are different! Their object is one their goal is one--it is the Creator. When their is complete harmony between these two streams, results would be immidiate& fruitful for the society.there shall be no more strife or clash of civilizations. the moot question is; are we civilized? we are living in 21st century but our behavour is anything but civilized. we should look deep within ourselves and 'feel' whether there is an element named charcter.till then let us continue our search in the field of physical sciences but forget about spirituality.becuase in that 'discipline' the prereuisites are very difficult to follow as these involve development of inner values(which are already there but need only to be patented) like compassion, sacrifice, right conduct, love and peace, which are alien words these days.little-self
