* * * * * The 2012 Solution * * * * *

“I am the last,” the man answered slowly.

The first tear of Charon’s long life rolled down his cheek. Nothing had ever made him cry before: nothing had ever made him weep.


An emergency news broadcast came on to all TV channels…

“The massive supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park exploded today and destroyed six surrounding states and a portion of Canada. More after the break.”

Before anyone could ponder this, God Himself suddenly appeared at the podium.

“Thank God!” everyone said, at the exact same time.

When the applause finally died down after a few hours, God spoketh thusly:

"I was truly surprisest, for once in my life, when the last human on Earth didst diest and then chosest Hell over Heaven so as to be with his sweetheart that he lovest so muchest. I had not expectest this beautiful gesture and so it cameth as quitest a shock—because I purposely didn’t let Myself knowest of all outcomes aheadest of time—but it demonstratest that my experiment with humans had acheivest greatest success, all the other silliness and nonsense of history not withstanding. Therefore, althoughest the psychic lady was right about 2012—as I let Myself seeth somest of the immediate future—I am canceling this 2012 disaster and so as such the future of the Earth will go on and on. The Yellowstone erruption is also repealed and so all will be as it was the day beforest. Furthermorest, Hell will be turnest into a very pleasant place such as the Earth, for it was most unkind of Me to punish the human nature that I Myself designest with so much aforethought. Nor was it your fault to be thrust into this existence unaskest, as my fine creation, Omar Khayyam, puttest it so well:

Into this Universe, and why not knowing,

Anyway, it’s all up to you, now. I’m going on a long vacation.” The Almighty then vanished.

Everyone leapt for joy and cheered long after God had disappeared back into the invisible realm.

The partying at the Gathering then resumest in earnest.

Charon soon appeared and joined in as a friend to all those good people that he was never able to meet in his old job. Nobody Nowhere, Charon’s good friend and ours, arrived, as well, with his now lively sweetheart.

The morning sun was shining over his body, making him look like a Greek God. Tarina sighed, after last night's gathering they had retired to one of the chateau's many spacious and luxurious rooms. It was a night that Tarina was certain she would never forget.
The telephone rang it's seemingly merry jingle, and Tarina bounded over to it, trying to get to it before her man was disturbed from his slumber. "Hello? Mademoiselle Torney? Yes, this is she. There is an older Gentleman down here at the front desk and he wants to come up and see you, and of course, being that it's our policy to protect our guests privacy I thought it best that I ring you and you may come down and see him, or shall I send him up? Umm, could you please tell me this fella's name ? Tarina said the last part loudly so Austin would hear- Oh dear me, he's gone-
Tarina quickly hung up, and told Austin, they each grabbed their weapons, Austin motioned "Quiet" They almost jumped when a knock was heard at the door. Austin, Tarina, it's me for God's sake, open the door!
Austin and Tarina both shared an incredulous look and bolted for the door....
"Dad" Tarina said "how on earth did you find me?" Her father Arnold Rissanen gave her that grin with a twinkle in his eyes he said "Oh a little birdie told me!" Austin, walking over said ho- Tarina slapped his stomache in a hushing motion "Dad this is my new Husband, Austin" Arnold's eyes went big and then narrowed when he scoped out Austin. He stroked his mustache while he sized him up.
"Pleased to meet you, my name is Arnold, you can call me Arnie, everyone does" he held his hand out, Austin, grinning shook his hand and said "It's an honour sir.." With a clap on the back which almost knocked Austin off of his feet, he quickly caught himself, and "It's Arnie, any guy that my daughter thought was fitting for husband material is fine by me!"
Tarina was all smiles, it had been too long since she had seen her Dad. Finally though, concern sunk in. "Dad? Is everything okay?" As he stroked his moustache, he came up to his only daughter and held her close and said Ì have missed you, but there is something I need your help with, and I`ve known about your lifestyle for a while now.`` Tarina, looked at him and said `Lifestyle Dad? What do you mean? `` (My keys are messing up, sorry folks). ``I mean you are an agent, now don`t play dumb with me!`` `Tarina, smiled and rather than continue on with the ruse, she said to her dad `-``Dad okay, yes I am, now what do you need help with, is someone hurt, dad tell me!`` Òkay, sit down, you too Austin. One month ago to this day, your mother went on a cruise. She was scheduled to arrive in the port of Vancouver two weeks ago. I`ve used all my contacts, and I`ve come up empty.

[Tarina]

She was due to arrive, and when I went to meet her and she didn`t come off of the ship I went straight to the Captain. He went through the ships registry, and checked out the cabin that she had been in. Her suitcase was still there, along with her passport, but both her and her purse were missing. I asked the Captain how could this happen, and he told me how sincerely bad he felt but it wasn`t his job to do a head count when they pulled into a foreign port to do a lay-over. When they resumed their voyage, the passengers knew what time they had to be back by. I had the entire ship searched, but she simply wasn`t there.``
`Dad thats terrible, what port did they lose her at? They told me it had to be in between Italy and Greece.``

Austin walked over to Tarina and said ``Honey stop, we will find her`. Tarina let herself be held, and heard her Dad sob, and pulled him into the hug too. Dad, we will do everything in our power to find Mom, okay? You just wait here- WHat the hell are yhou talking about, I am coming she`s my wife!`` Tarina told her dad she was sorry, and of course you`ll come.

Tarina called her Dad to come and sit down with her beside the computer they had set up.
