I've been thinking about this stuff for some time now, and at this point in my spiritual journey, I no longer see a difference between "consciousness" and "awareness". I also see "witnessing" as simply the act of being aware or conscious of something, whatever that something is.
Some people see consciousness as necessarily implying a duality. That in order to be "conscious", there has to be something to be "conscious of". I don't exactly see it that way anymore. Duality only occurs when there is awareness of *differences*. When your consciousness is merely conscious of consciousness itself, there is no duality, there is no difference to perceive, there is only awareness of being aware of awareness. This is the "I AM" which is at the root of all being, the indivisible Self beyond all human egos -- the One undifferentiated mind. This is when subject and object realize they are the exact same thing.
I see mind, matter, and spirit as all being made up of consciousness.
Mind is the consciousness of logical thought forms.
Matter is the consciousness of physical form.
Spirit is the consciousness of archetypical form.
But ALL are consciousness, or awareness (again, I must stress these are merely synonyms for me). However, all these qualities involve awareness of differences or limitations. All forms, whether they be physical or nonphysical, are the result of limitations being imposed on the otherwise undifferentiated pure awareness. So all those qualities will necessarily experience varying degrees of duality.
I don't believe it is possible to escape "doing". When you get down to it, even raw existence is a state of action, the involuntary act of "being". Existence is not an option -- consciousness cannot become unconscious (but it can forget that it was conscious). However, I consider "being" to be the most pure and absolute manifestation of energy (which is all consciousness is -- raw action), and all other states of action (or in otherwords, energy) are derived from this pure potential state of being.
