    Congratulations to ToeQuest

There was a forum, which I will not name, that I left because it was overrun with some frustratingly dogmatic individuals that couldn't get their head outside some boxes, even if it had no sides, and it was obvious things were heading downhill there. (It was also obvious that much of the "news" was becoming propoganda)

At that time they had about 3 times as many posts per hour as here ...

It appears that they did drop (as I guessed) and you guys have done great here. The activity here is almost equal to the other forum. (Of course quantity is not necessarily equal to quality, and they're both important but only when they're necessary or useful)

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you guys for the company and refreshing atmosphere here.

Nice work ToeQuest (and to you Robert)

    Re: Congratulations to ToeQuest

Let me quickly add that I don't regret the time I spent on the other forum as it helped to make very clear where the "edges" were that physical science could see, but it would have saved me some time if I would have left there sooner and gotten more perspectives on the picture, so in that sense it was my own fault for remaining as long as I did and not search for a broader perspective.

It is said that the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. The effect of synergy.

By what coincidence has Robert been influential in drawing each of our paths to this intersection?

I know that other forum that you speak of, Steve, and at least they kind of named you one of the most interesting people ever to visit there.

By and large, though, they are as you say, in a box, whereas ToeQuest is ever welcoming to all (but spammers).

Social glue is important to progress.

By what coincidence has Robert been influential in drawing each of our paths to this intersection?

Perhaps the happenstance of him purposely wishing for the TOE to progress, but perhaps he might tell us one day.

Reaching that point at which nothing else matters other than understanding reality is important.

Unfortunately it appears as though (in whichever area we care to mention) -
    - that
progress is unlikely amongst experts who have a vested interest in one theory being true over and above another.

    Take for instance human disease.

Is the disease caused by faulty genes or some environmental stressor?

The geneticist would fight the cause of genetics
    - the epidemiologist
    - the cause of the environment

    - though the battle isn't over whether the disease is caused by a human genetic defect or environmental factor

    - it's a fight for personal prestige, future success in grant proposals -
    - greater likelihood of gaining some prize or being invited onto the private University pay-per-lecture circuit.

    ~*~

People don't like ideas which invalidate their own expertise
    - neither do people like ideas which destabilize their own conception of reality
    - unsteady they feel.

All of which raises an interesting question
    - and that is how to perform research in a manner which doesn't penalise the scientist
    - moreover does not penalise the scientist who speaks over the head of another.

Experts don't appear to like admitting that there're ideas in their discipline which they cannot understand; pity that the expert fails to remember that just a few years back
    - they knew nothing, not even their own name.

Seems unfair that the scientist who tells the truth and underplays the importance of their area of research (relative to others) is rewarded by unemployment.

    ~*~

I wonder if people realise that fundamental science cannot be addressed by competition.
It's almost impossible to think whilst being attacked.

Humility - the knowledge that any discoveries which one happens upon are not a measure of the man
    - we'd have discovered (are on a trajectory to discover the truth of reality)
    - would have discovered everything that we currently have - regardless of specific identity of investigative personnel.

One should consider the generation of ToE as the species level task set
    - some 30,000 years ago
    to man
    - at speciation.

    Set

    Re: Congratulations to ToeQuest

The vested interests diminish as one looks freely at what nature actually does and allows, for this is the expression of the TOE beneath it.

Testable theories are fine, such as nature being holographic, for the natural sciences can possibly show that someday if it's true.

And a vested interest will have their owners do more research in that area. But if 'zip' shows up, then it's time to move on and I guess SB-UK is saying that, for some, the belief becomes them and so they get stuck there.

Not only that, but the Toe message remains intact no matter the implementation—and that is what is.

May the light continue to shine.
    Personally,
    I don;t believe in "coincedences.
Funny thing God became apparent shortly after the arrival of man.
"Coincidence" is mans way of keeping God anonymous.
Even though His will is abundantly evident.

    Thanks Steve,
    and thanks Robert, for Toequest.

    Re: Congratulations to ToeQuest

A coincidence is seen a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection, such as a lady told me once about here being in a traffic accident which demolished her car. She, totally uninjured, began to ride a bike, keeping the insurance money rather than replacing the car. She had a vested interest in God sending her messages of this type and so she said that God instigated the accident to teach her things such as to use a bike and also to appreciate life.

The vested insterest in god’s will was so deep that there could be no telling her that lots of cars moving around meant that there would be some average number of accidents happening due to traffic, road conditions, car conditions, lack of attention, etc., a co-incidence of events that were not even so rare, but “No”, she said, that God arranged the other person’s life who caused the accident, perhaps putting a thought into him that he should go out somewhere, or he was out and God made him veer into a crash or whatever.

Well, then, couldn’t some of the other crashes just be so-called accidents caused by traffic and its inherent conditions? “No.”

Hey, well, wht can I say but that stuff moves and all possible interactions happen, from the boringing same to the ‘rare’, not that there isn’t something to be about natural and logical effects, some of which could be seen as determinism. And maybe that’s what ‘God wants’!

    A digression…

Leave your bike out in the rain and it will rust—a natural effect.

If you live on a corner and let hedges grow wils, car drivers may not see across very well and crash, you getting fined—a logical effect.

If someone respect property and throws a regular chair into the pool, they, although some could, wouldn’t see all the possible problems, like maybe its get cold and no one can swim to get the chair back, or whatever.

In general, if one, say, has a general idea that respect is a good thing, then one is not burdened to think of all the possible consequences that might ensue from disrespect, no one being able to see them all anyway.
