By the way, do you have any idea as to why this forum is so dead as of late, and why people are choosing to leave?

There are three main reasons Melanie.

The answer to the first reason, is in the comparison of how many posts I have, and you have. You have over 8 posts to my 1, yet I have been here longer then you. This a forum of knowledge, and not chit chat. Robert has created a place for chit chat and it is barely used. This whole year has been dominate by a hand full of members who feel they must post to every thread that is in the "today's posts" Column. A lot of members that have left here complained about this feverishly before disappearing. Flooding the threads of others with idle chit chat and off subject links is very very bad for this forum. I feel for those who seek community here at Toequest. But what kind of community is it when, those few disrespect the rest of the community for the sake of their own enjoyment?

I started this thread in the hope that it may give another way of chit chatting, arguing and complaining, without flooding one's and others threads. If every member opened a thread titled like mine here in the public square, I feel that we can have a better community.

The second reason is Melanie, that a few use the threads of others to promote their beliefs and idea's with out any regard or respect. Now posting one's idea's in a respectful manner is great, but there are those who out right take over others threads with endless posts of nothing but personal art, poems, links, etc. This is also very very bad for this forum. I would personally ban any one who constantly did this to others. This forum is not owned by a few who dominate it, but by the whole Internet community! A guest or a member should not have to wear out their thumb scrolling through many pages of personal chit chat just to get to a post by the author. If one has no constructive post to post, don't!

Thirdly Melanie, the biggest reason is, that there are many who think that it is their duty as a member of one faith based belief system or another, to tell those of different beliefs that they are stupid and or worst for thinking the way they do. Also preaching that their beliefs are superior and must be adhered to seems to be another false duty they adhere to.

This is a fact!! Unless one is seeking to know all they can, no amount of preaching or fact giving is going to change their views. There are those who say "oh you can not debate the issue ", I say that believers of different faiths only have arguments to express. This constant your idea's and beliefs are stupid routine by many is also very very bad for this forum.

Hate, Elitism, and Preaching is the biggest enemy to this Forum!!!

An interesting idea for a thread, IMO.

As I recall, in addition to expanding upon his own T.O.E. theory, Propat's Idea thread was one where a great deal of interaction and socializing took place. Prof had an eye for beauty, in all forms, and I chuckle to recall how a few of the regulars used to tempt him into posting just far enough to naughty that a moderator would look in.

The day that the picture of the heifers got posted stands out for me. Poor Prof was in abject terror that somehow this depiction of female bovines at graze might offend the female posters of the forum and the wrath of Leskey would descend upon him.

Prof's Idea thread was one of, if not THE most viewed thread on the forum.

When we lost Prof was when I observed a significant change of energy take place at this forum. Prof was at the forum nearly every day, meeting and greeting and debating without serious acrimony in the time that I observed.

Just my thoughts on the topic of change.....

Hello Lorrina, thanks for dropping by.

I was hoping that you would come through with the exception to the rule. Everything you said about Prof Pat and his "idea" thread is so true. There are a few threads here that like socializing, but the overwhelming majority of threads here like to stay on subject.

I wonder how much of the socializing in the Idea thread spilled over into threads where it was not welcome?

I personally have seen the many many complaints against socializing in one's threads.

Lorrina I did think after I posted the previous posts that you would show up and read past my complaints only to post an exception, as a justification. So predictable

There are at least 60 guests in Toequest at any time I look, if they were interested in socializing they would join and do so. Instead IMHO, they don't join and post because of all the socializing. This is a knowledge forum with the goal of seeking a theory of e everything, face book is for socializing, IMHO.

Lorrina how about you starting a "Lablewrench's chit chat thread" also? If all socializing members would, we could may be keep a lot of conversations like this out of others threads?

I quite agree with your comments about posters hijacking threads or posting completely off topic and repeatedly.

My suggestion would be the formation of a thread where all of these out of context posts could be relocated to. Call it 'Hijacked' or 'What Were They Thinking' or something of that nature. If the O.P. objects, the posts get moved to this thread. The post itself does not get deleted from the forum, only from the thread, so the person posting it retains it's authorship.

These posts should NOT BE DELETED from the forum unless they are seriously out of line, by which I would include personal attack and name calling. If persons are going to be unprofessional in that manner, let the record stand to haunt them in perpetuity. Perhaps they will think twice, or at least the evidence for banning, even permanently, will be available for all to appraise.

Another suggestion may be to limit the number of successive posts that any member save the O.P. may place on any one thread in a day. I do not doubt that the technology exists, yet such a restriction could possibly have the effect of further curtailing participation.

In regard to 'the silent majority', I disagree with your assessment . They will not join, in fact, I suspect that most are already members.

It is far easier to observe than to input. The path of least resistance. On another Science forum where I have been spending some time, at this moment there are 19 members on line and 424 guests/observers.

As for starting a chitchat thread of my own, I did that a long time ago. My own place to go when I want to speak to nearly anything. Guests have always been welcome but not too many have wandered by in a while. http://www.toequest.com/forum/anecdo...tml#post149118

My observation would be that the other science forum is also lacking for new input and hard science and if it weren't for a few energetic posters and some tolerance for conversational drift, there would be little content to work with.
