Common Sense - 02-05-2007, 04:02 PM

I've been looking for a place to post my comment and I decided to do it here because Stephen here talks about Materialism, even if in relation to Physics. Has anyone realized that a Theory of Everything which must find explanation to all phenomena known explained today by different specialized fields must also include SOCIAL Sciences, meaning it must also explain human behavior in terms of Physics? Or what, Gravity and Relativity don't apply to the question of supermarket where you prefer to buy your food? We're taught to think in terms of arrogance: Nature is Nature and We are We. Well, it's not so in practice: everything from climate to particles has to do with us messing with all of it, think of HUMANITY'S place in evrything you're thinking about which I don't deny it's fascinating and necessary. Someone in this forum said something "common sense". Charles Wright Mills, a radical American sociologist, has got an exquisit phrase: "COMMON SENSE IS MORE COMMON THAN SENSE"

Andrew;
I have created this thread so you can make your comments separately from the “Cause of Gravity” thread. You can select a forum and create your own threads when you wish to discuss a topic.

BTW: Welcome to ToeQuest.

David

The notion of a theory of everything needing to explain emergent behaviors of complex systems must be abandoned.
Laws have been and are still being created which are only subject to the survival and usefulness of its observers in the antropic principle
The TOE is only the unification of gravity with the other fundamantal forces, nothing more.
Everything else under the sun already has its TOE and can be summed up in one word:
Evolution

That's the nutshell that we need to crack then?

Exactly, the unification of gravity with the other fundamental forces will not explain why I like Mexican food. People need to keep that in mind before they are looking at the TOE as a savior to their (and our society's) problems

You should really try good old English Bangers and mash,or even pie and mash,once
eaten the solution to the TOE will quickly arise within your mind!

To dlviwing: my apologies for interference with the thread, but there are so many of them that I can't go through all of them in a short time that I can stay connected. Regarding the main issue I tried to introduce in my comment - introduction of Social Sciences into TOE and eventual integration of them with Physics which I think could move the foundation of established common sense in Sciences and their relationship with Politics and everyday life - I'm frankly shocked by the comments of Mr. Nobody: first it shows knowledge of complex systems - and I'm studying Complexity too, a fascinating field which is dealing precisely with unification of Sciences - and then denies the very purpose of the existence of the field. I don't want to offend anybody, specially here, but I find Mr. Nobody's comments as a show of that conservative common sense which I'm trying to shake.
