Question What happened to yesterday? - 03-13-2006, 04:20 AM

I have a perculiar, but thought-provoking question(hopefully). What happened to yesterday?

1. The timeline collapsed, so we cannot experience it again.
2. We are actually living in yesterday.
3. We exist in different universes, once we've had a day and it's past, we move on and the other us live it as a first encounter (so we exist in differnet time intervals).
4. Went down the dumps
5. Any other solutions will be much appreciated!

I really want to hear everyone elses' interpretations on this thought.

Thanks

We live in today but carry the experience of yesterday. It didn't go down the dumps but went through our mind. Yesterday became a part of the information we carry in our brain. Yesterday gave birth to today. Time is an illusion, yesterday and today are the same with entropic changes

Perhaps time dose not exist, this is difficult for me to say as i have children that i enjoy watching grow, however i suspect that time is useful to file experiences in order this happened yesterday that may happen tomorrow, if we forget time and think of all things as one never ending moment you still find it easiest to break that moment up into parts, that needs a name you could call it time odear.
Perhaps time is like light traveling at a precise speed in all directions through this universe we only experience this time because of our position in the universe perhaps time closer to the center of the universe {if one exists} is different to ours, time is information whizzing through the universe the great regulater and filing system.

Andy,

If and only if there is motion, then there is time. Therefore, if and only if there is no time, there is no motion. So time must exist if we move, and I believe we do.

Yesterday still exists, we just do not have access to it. Our perception of time is an illusion- thus the idea that yesterday is 'gone' is an illusion as well.

Yesterday is being forgotten- time exists as the conscious observer apprehends it, and all other things move into the past. It is a collective endeavor. If all conscious minds got together and apprehended a single moment together, we could halt the flow of time.

Yesterday exists in the same place as five days ago and ten million years ago- all of those times are placed in a single place.

Cool time - 03-14-2006, 10:54 AM

I have been struggling with the question of time for a while now (no pun intended!). I had come to this forum with the idea that all time simultaneously occurs, so every moment is every other moment. Now I am not sure. If time is only a way to mark position relative to previous position (ie needs motion), then it may simply be illusory. But if it's illusory, how to organize our experiences? I still am attracted to the idea that we simultaneously are born, live and die. So I guess my answer would be yesterday is now and continues to be now.

I must confess I have always believed on some level that time does not exist, and that everything "happens" at once sort of.

So our future already exist, although perhaps as a plurality.

Anyway, I never really believed in time as a real entity, just an observational entity.

I think our future exists, not as plurality but as directly connected to our present, so that change in present (or past) changes future (or present) instantly.

The saying "there is nothing in the dark that is not there in the light" as we try to sooth the fear of our children, applies here. What existed yesterday is still here today and will be here tomorrow; it just may be in a different order of arrangement.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!

From my own thoughts, I believe it's something to do with memory. Let me clarify.

I remember what happened at tennis yesterday, but when I think back to it, the pictures are discontinues, and also many gaps (e.g a missing arm of someone, a chair that lost one leg, a missing part on a wall etc)(because the observer cannot capture all events happened at that point of time)to travel back there.

And let's assume that we do travel back with missing parts, the physical reality would be disastrous, the material world would be incomplete. So consequently we cannot travel back at all.

But from you guys' interpretations, time (and space) is a continuum (single entity) so yesterday, tommorow and all points in time already exist, so yesterday is only forgotten (like tinytree said), but not destroyed. However this leads to another question, if yesterday is a thought, how can we destroy it?
