No one asks anyone to doubt consciousness, plus it is much only a subject and never an object, for that is it job (to witness). It's just that since no one knows how it operates, any leap from there to say more is just a guess.
In general we know that consciousness can be affected by affecting the brain, so, in general, consciousness seems to need a brain to operate.

The "Brain" is part of the body/brain organism consciousness is it's "functioning".
Consciousness arises out of "Awareness" twice removed..therefore a "Trinity" of such, if so it might be said... abjects are interpreted by "our consciousness" culture and conditioning have created the "labels" consciousness "uses to relate to objects fr identification...this is known as illuminosity. Which plays out on the screen of our imagination.
A... Do you not grasp "the depth" of this declaration???
What's "The Most" Peaceful time of the day?
When our eyes open.
Unless we've been 'startled awake'.
Then the thinking mechanism kicks in and by then
"people are psychologically dressed
before they even get out of bed.
Try it in the morning...you'll SEE!
I call it self-circumcision...or "The Kindest Cut".
open your eyes brothers and sisters...open your eyes.

n. A signal to sleeping soldiers to dream of battlefields no more, but get up and have their blue noses counted. In the American army it is ingeniously called "rev-e-lee," and to that pronunciation our countrymen have pledged their lives, their misfortunes and their sacred dishonor.

Yes, consciousness is the functioning of the brain and the brain came first. No brain, no consciousness. Lower creatures with less brain probably have less consciousness as well as what is presented to consciousness. A snail, for example, may be only conscious of light and dark, warm and cold.
Further statements on consciousness to be an outside thought receiver or a path to a One are just conjecture since consciousness has not been explained (even by Dennett who wrote 'Consciousness Explained').
People always suppose things that just sound good.
How about: The Universe is made out of consciousness stuff. Sounds good, but who can prove it? Or say, the 3rd dimension is a projection. Sounds OK since we know about holograms, but, if it is, then that is nature's way; it doesn't mean a Powerful Guy did it, or, if not, that nature is a God or a One.

Consciousness may be the existential core of us dependent on brain development, and phenomenal experience within the self making use of all brain centers for consciousness to complete itself...

A Rudimentary consciousness came into being simultaneously with the embroy...the body/brain organism.
It too "evolved" in its own way.
The Greeks knew this and celebrated their birthday in honor of that which they understood as their "genius".

A willingness to grow along spiritual lines means you have to understand nature as being Co Creator with that spoken here of as... the No thing... aka Awareness or God The Father of All if you prefer...

You put the cart before the horse A. but that's ok...
Check this out...pg 25, 26 or so...
there's an very poignant anology about a man (non-gender specific...i.e. consciousness, aka an ambiguous or wayward soul, e.g. 'normally/temporally expressing as the thinking mechanism')
who temporaily gets knocked "unconscious".

we gotta crawl, before we can walk brother...
(dare i say walk, which is to be taken to mean 'Graceful',before we can fly?)
namaste`brother,

Like The Firebird, Drifter
O God! Refresh and gladden my spirit. Purify my heart. Illumine my powers. I lay all my affairs in Thy hand. Thou art my Guide and my Refuge. I will no longer be sorrowful and grieved; I will be a happy and joyful being. O God! I will no longer be full of anxiety, nor will I let trouble harass me. I will not dwell on the unpleasant things of life.
O God! Thou art more friend to me than I am to myself. I dedicate myself to Thee, O Lord.
