Quest for a Physical TOE
Almost every one accepts ‘action at a distance through empty space’ as an illogical concept. Search for a logical concept to explain direct actions started very early in the history and continues to date without much success. Various types of ‘aethers’, used in the past, were not very successful to provide logical media, for many reasons. Different types of aethers, proposed in these theories, had no uniformity. Although, concept of aether is now discarded by most physicists, currently, we use many similar undefined concepts (imaginary particles with mysterious properties, different types of undefined fields, structure-less space with physical properties, mathematical constructs like space-time continuum, etc.) in conjunction with various phenomena, to bring certain logic to their actions. Use of these concepts with widely varying and indefinable properties indicates dire necessity for a medium, without which physical phenomena cannot be logically understood. Hence, quest for a unified theory should start with a formulation for logical development of an all-encompassing universal medium.
A logical universal medium should be a real entity. It should have objective reality and exist in space (space is an indefinable entity, presupposed by rational beings, whenever they envisage matter bodies). Matter alone can provide substance, required for objective reality and positive existence in space. Therefore, it is imperative that an ideal medium should be made of matter, the same entity out of which all three-dimensional matter particles are made of. However, we (the rational beings) consider only three-dimensional matter as real. Hence, irrespective of the fact that only 3D matter particles are considered real, matter should be able to structure the medium also. This requirement shows that it should be possible for matter to exist in different forms without losing its identity as matter and objective reality.
Space is usually partitioned by three mutually perpendicular coordinate planes to make it convenient for us to define locations of objects. Hence, (locations of) all real objects in 3D space can be defined in 3D spatial system in relation to coordinate planes. Therefore we should be able to define locations of all matter bodies, including those in hidden state, in 3D spatial system. All matter bodies, including those in hidden state, have their existence in all three spatial dimensions. However, if measurements of certain matter bodies in any or all spatial dimensions are not tangible by our scale standards, these matter bodies will not appear to be real bodies to us. These matter bodies, whose dimensional measurements in any (or all) spatial dimension are not tangible, remain hidden from us, despite their reality. In its 3D state, we can observe matter. If dimensional measurement of a matter body is less the observable limit in any or all spatial dimensions, despite it being a real entity, we will not be able to observe it. Thus, in other dimensional states (like; 1D or 2D states), despite its real nature, matter remain hidden from us. If the medium is formed by matter in its hidden states, the medium and its actions will be hidden from us and at the same time, we will be able observe results of all actions by the medium on 3D matter particles.
A useful medium should be universal in its character. It should extend infinitely in all directions. It should be reasonably isotropic, homogeneous, self-sustaining, stable and static under all conditions. Since two 3D matter bodies cannot occupy the same space simultaneously, the medium should fill entire space outside smallest 3D matter particles, without scope for empty regions. In this way, the medium will be in direct contact with every 3D matter particle in universe. All actions will be directly between 3D matter particles and the medium. Simultaneous actions between the medium and many 3D matter particles can be understood as (apparent) interactions between the 3D matter particles. Universal medium will provide an absolute reference for all actions and interactions in nature.
Matter is the same, in whichever form it appears. Hence, matter that forms observable 3D matter and hidden universal medium should have a common fundamental existence. Since such an existence is unknown, we should postulate a ‘most basic matter particle’. This postulated particle is a real entity with positive existence in space. It has objective reality in space. It should be able to constitute universal medium as well as 3D matter particles.
Logically, every entity has to be created or developed from its predecessor-particles, until the chain reaches the most basic of all particles. Hence, it is essential that all matter bodies, including universal medium, are created or developed from the most basic matter particles. Let us call these most basic matter particles as ‘quanta of matter’. There should be unlimited quantity of quanta of matter in nature. Since a quantum of matter is a hidden object, none of its parameters are directly accessible. It should be postulated as an ideal matter particle for a unified physical theory. Its structure, content and properties are postulated to suit the development of a logical unified physical theory that explain all physical phenomena under same physical laws, applicable under all conditions. In order to avoid circular logic and conflicting behavior, there should not be any other postulated matter particle in the concept. There can be no imaginary particles, mysterious properties or actions at a distance through empty space. All actions and effects have to originate from postulated quanta of matter and they should have preceding causes. All causes should result in following effects.
Quanta of matter, using their inherent properties, themselves should form universal medium to entirely fill the space, outside 3D matter particles (even if 3D matter bodies are rare or absent). By having a real universal medium to fill the space in its entirety, structured universal medium will be able to substitute for form-less and functional space, used by us. Inherently stable system of universal medium should extend in all directions indefinitely. It has to be reasonably isotropic, homogeneous and serene. In order to make the universal medium, a self-stabilizing entity, it will be necessary to have a mechanism by which constituent quanta of matter are held under constant compression. This will ensure that any deformation in universal medium will result in a stabilizing reaction to remove the deformation at the earliest. This reaction of universal medium will produce a universal effort that can substitute for ‘gravitation’. Gravitational effort will be proportional to the extent of universal medium, applying that effort. Hence, gravitation will be a push-effort.
Extent of universal medium between two matter bodies is always less than the extent of universal medium on their farther sides. Gravitation experienced by these matter bodies on their farther sides will be greater than gravitation on their nearer sides. Resultant of these efforts will appear to push the matter bodies towards each other. This apparent attraction between the matter bodies will be the gravitational attraction, which is the cause of dynamic properties of gravitation. Dynamical properties of gravitation are the only properties known at present. Static properties of gravitation are more important and fundamental.
Gravitation could create 3D matter particles from free quanta of matter available during occasional local breakdown of universal medium’s structure. These 3D matter particles are shaped and fashioned into basic 3D matter bodies by universal medium. Stable 3D matter particles, in turn, should form all other superior matter bodies under suitable environment created by universal medium. All actions, interactions, developments and characteristic properties, related to matter bodies are derived from the postulated properties of quanta of matter.
Reaction, developed in universal medium during its deformation, could produce various types of ‘natural forces’, known today. As all these natural forces are developed in similar manner by the same agency and act in similar manner. Hence, fundamentally, there will be only one type of effort (commonly known as force). Different types of ‘natural forces’ are different manifestations of same effort, related to different phenomena. Different types of deformations in universal medium, producing various types of natural forces could represent various types of ‘fields’ we use currently.
Mathematics may be a good tool for development of physical theories, but it should not dictate logical reasoning. Therefore, my aim is to establish a logical concept that suits a unified theory, before delving deeply into mathematical treatments and derivations.
I am keen to discus development and merit of a concept (currently available in book form ‘Hypothesis on MATTER’), along above described chain of reasoning. Topics covered in the concept will be many and it will not be possible to discuss all of them here. However, if at least few learned members are willing, we may discuss as many topics are possible. In order to understand the chain of reasoning, it is essential to follow the concept in a sequential manner, starting from the very basics.
