Kuhn A Synopsis from the original by Professor Frank Pajares From the Philosopher's Web Magazine (As extracted from Google) http://www.des.emory.edu/mfp/Kuhn.html (Excerpt from paragraph one: "Research is therefore not about discovering the unknown, but rather a strenuous and devoted attempt to force nature into the conceptual boxes supplied by professional education.") I find it interesting that the first post I read here involves the subject of a course I took in college. It was a survey, one credit course in English. However, the class used Kuhn's book as the basis for discussion, and each week we had respected 'scientists' come to discuss how in their field there was an establish paradigm that was 'shifted'. Living next to IBM and Mayo Clinic, we had computer programmers, physicians in various specialties, biologists, engineers, even artists come to speak for us. Each week, after their talk, we had to write a paper detailing the discussion and how it applied to Kuhn's opinions. (That's how the English fit in.) My instructor had been a mechanical engineer that returned to college for her degree in English, so came at things from a similar point of view as I have. Needless to say, I aced that class. Way to go me! A one credit A! (Love to boost that gpa) Actually, the course seemed fascinating, so I took it although I didn't need it, I graduated ultimately with about 230 credits.. I think only 180 were needed and a 3.83 gpa. Anyway, to topic at hand: Kuhn. His book is a fast read, and often repeats the primary point with many anecdotal evidences. As always, I recommend going to the source. And to be honest, since you are trying to 'shift my paradigm', I am hesitant and skeptical of your position wrt GUT. However, in speaking with you, Puff, and in reading some of what you post, you strike me as having some semblance of intelligence. So, I will try to approach the balance with an open mind. So you know my point of view, I'm classically educated in physics and I'm skeptical of a GUT (Grand Unified Theory) occurring without some sort of nod to God. I'm one of those Christian types. There's a few personal paradigms there that will be practically immoveable. - Melissa (Aka 'Penokean') | Latest 5 articles | | |
