Enough said; I am not going to comment on that.

Re: An Idea

So lets get back to the beginning, and my beginning is strings.

The Theory of Everything
(The Standard Model of Physics)

Not so long ago we saw the universe as particles moving in space, then 'String theory' was introduced to better explain the organization of the universe, but more recently this has evolved into 'M theory'.
In standard particle physics, particles are thought to be points moving through space, tracing out a line known as the 'World Line'. For the different interactions that we see in nature to occur there must be more possible degrees of freedom (dimensions) for a particle to move in than just their position and velocity. Such dimensions could be mass, electric charge or spin. The standard model of the universe was designed around Quantum Field Theory (QFT), which allows theories to be developed and be consistent with quantum mechanics and special relativity. These theories successfully described three of the four known interactions in nature (Electromagnetism, Strong and Weak nuclear force). They also described the interaction between electromagnetism and weak nuclear force (Electroweak Theory). The fourth interaction (Gravity), which is described in Einsteins theory of General Relitivity does not seem to fit. When the rules of QTF are applied to general relativity the results seen are impossible. For example; the force between two gravitons would be infinite, which can't happen.
String Theory replaces the range of different particles with a single funamental building block. This is known as a 'string'. These strings can be open ended or 'tied at the ends' forming a loop or ring. As a string moves through time it traces out a sheet or a tube, depending on which type of string it is. Strings can vibrate freely. Different vibrations create the different particle types. For example; one vibrational mode makes a string appear as an electron, another could make a photon, even a graviton. String theory recieved a lot of attention because it could describe the interaction of two gravitons, whereas the previous theorys could not. String theory also has the necessary dimensions to describe other interactions. This gave hope for a new theory which would unify all particles and forces, 'The Theory of Everything'
The known subatomic particles are classifed depending upon the way in which they spin. The two types are called Bosons and Fermions. Bosons carry forces, and fermions make up the matter of which we are made. Originaly String Theory did not describe Fermions, only Bosons. This meant matter particles were not included. To obtain a theory which includes both Fermions and Bosons, Supersymmetry was used and this gave us Superstring theory. The problem with this is that five different theorys developed and only three of them had no mathmatical inconsistencies. For two of the theorys the funamental object is a closed string, while in another, open strings are used. Two more theorys were developed by mixing the best parts of Bosonic strings and Superstrings, these are Heterotic String Theorys. Studying these theorys was problematic, as we did not have all the neccesary tools to test all possible values of the paramaters involved.
We are all used to the idea of three dimensions (3D), but time is also a dimension. This makes four dimensions that we can percive. String Theory predicts that space-time has ten dimensions, not four. It is thought that the 'extra' dimensions are tightly packed on complex shapes known as Orbifolds and Calabi-Yau Manifolds. These dimensions, or degrees of freedom are such things as charge on an electron. It is belived that the charge arises because the elctron is moving in one of these other dimensions.
Recently techniques have been developed to thoroughly explore the theorys. This led to the developmet of M-Theory. This theory describes the previous five theorys of superstrings as just different aspects of the same theory. M-Theory seems to tell us that there is another dimesion, bringing the total to eleven. It is said that M-Theory should be seen as an eleven dimenisonal theory that looks ten dimensional at some of the points in its parameters. Now this gave us a new funamental object, Branes (membranes). These Branes look like strings if the eleventh dimension is curls into a small circle (like looking at a tube from the end).

Re: An Idea

Hi Profpat

Back to basics - three points for consideration:

1) The string shown in your first diagram is missing an essential element - it should be fixed at (at least) one end. The looped string is simply not right (even Brian Greene had admitted the loops don't work).

2) Gravitons do not exist as particles moving back and forth between massive particles; gravity is an effect not a force which is why it is so weak and different from the others.

3) M Theory 'branes' are simply an invention which attempts to provide a workable background for the unworkable looped strings. It's a no-braner.

regards
Felix

PS - are those little men made of string?

FELIX PLAYING WITH HIS STRING & MOBIUS STRIP.

Felix can you give the link or site where Brian Greene states that superstrings looped are not workable? I would be most interseted in this.

Thanks,

Pat

In THEORY unlooped superstrings are attached to a D Brane, and I'm not to big on gravitons myself.

Re: An Idea

This was from an interview on the Paula Gordon Show with Brian Greene. Please see the the last sentence.

Conversation 2
Dr. Greene describes our day-to-day experience as a thin veneer covering the true workings of the universe. He distinguishes theories & theorists from experiments and experimenters. He explains how they must work together in spite of unfortunate divergences at the end of the 20th century.ÊHe tells us just how small "tiny" is. Dr. Greene shows how today's theories require a monumental restructuring of the way we think about things and gives examples. He explains how string theory brings together quantum theory and general relativity. He describes how the idea of dimensions has changed and gives examples. He defines string theory. He describes quarks and electrons (which make up everything) as little loops of vibrating energy -- strings -- which, like violin strings, vibrate in different patterns.

Re: An Idea

Right Prof. You could manage to confuse me. However I am a great believer of the cyclic universe theory. But I am trying to figure out how this cycle started...

So here are my thoughts.

Something has to be eternal, in that I don't believe you can have something from nothing.

But do we have something? Are thoughts something real and tangible? Is it not possible that this relative reality is an illusion? But than we would still have the question where do thoughts come from?

So we either have a universe which is eternal or God who is eternal. Maybe they are one and the same.

Needless to say thinking about eternal is more confusing than thinking about something from nothing.

I hope this confuses you as much as I am, regarding this subject.

On with our exploration.

Best,

Pat

Re: An Idea

Okay Fredrick, in making matter energy is getting used up. Is there any way this energy is replenished back? Or does it happen when matter is broken down again into energy?

If two waves come from different directions, the water can get very choppy because two valleys and two crests would enforce each other, while one valley and one crest would annihilate each other.

I would not use the term hole, but I would use the term void or nothing with this void/nothing being an aspect of matter (not equal to the void being taken in by matter). Rather, matter is made up of energy that is more than the void but additionally it is also taking up the void location, warping the energy in the process.

Consider the potential energy the tissue and the void a little spot of water. The tissue gets warped and the wet spot is fully incorporated in the tissue, creating matter. Matter would therefore be more than just taking up the void. Potential energy + void = matter (warped energy).

The universe is a dynamic place, meaning the waves are there, and in our materialized universe they are always there. Though individually they are going in all directions, collectively there is only a single direction: outwardly. Playing tennis, you can consider matter the warped ball of energy going in a particular infinite direction (but influenced by encountered circumstances, with itself also creating circumstances experienced by other matter).
