It is an assumption that the universe is a closed system. To assume this goes way out on a limb. Physics is on that limb and the limb is quivering. What if the universe is an open system? Can you prove that it is a closed system?

Most everyone does make that assumption...but that doesn't make the assumption right.

Its a bigger assumption to assume that its not (The Laws of conservation). So lets call this a moot point and move on.

Have not fully had time to digest your previous post yet. busy at work and will reply soon as poss.

I am suggesting that our ability to measure and interpret much of the evidence is lacking. The amount of human error that I witness daily, (and on occasion contribute to ) is evidence of that challenge, lol.

Yes, you can argue that science has stricter standards and more stringent controls. In the final analysis, we are human, and we tend to be somewhat fond of our own opinions.

Perhaps if funding were not a barrier, some matters might progress more quickly.

We want to be rather cautious regarding what 'evidence' is 'discovered' and made public. Heaven forbid that we should suddenly have everyone thinking for themself.

That might have social and fiscal implications, lol.....

Personally, I'm not sure whether the harm we do as a species, through ignorance of the consequences of our actions, is a lessor or greater fear, than the potential consequences of a new and more powerful piece of knowledge yielding to our probing....

As dangerous as a straight razor in the hands of a monkey, is discovery in the hands of mankind. With no intention of harm, still, much damage can be done.

    As always,

    Gregory, Gregory, Gregory,

My English teacher would be tempted to give you a homework assignment for the three words highlighted in red in your sentence structure.

Your meaning is conveyed, though we shall have to review the final presentation when you gentlemen have a body of work ready for peer review.

The Rhyme of The Ancient Mariner comes to mind. Just think of me as your personal albatross, lol...

I believe that Gregory is saying that we accept that for either of two moving things, it is that either one could be considered at rest verus the other, as done successfully in science (relative).

Wick is still OK if He arbitrarily picks one thing as really moving and another not as long as he doesn't use this 'moving' fact solely by itself to go on to deduce more info.

Lol.... Now that you have pointed it out its obvious ... rotflmao

So smarty, here is a challenge .... to construct a sentence using the word 'and' five times consecutively .... it can be done quite easily ....

I asked that a poster be drawn up advertising "Fun And Games", but I was disappointed by the result.

The gap between 'Fun' and 'And', and 'And' and 'Games' was disproportionate and the sign therefore lacked symmetry.

You're cute when you're playful, lol

I've got to crash, worked all night and pushing 20 hours awake now. Catch you up the trail.....

    Re: Resting Light Theory

    Well done, Labelwench!!

    My version went like this:

When it comes to matter and space, the space between 'matter' and 'and' and 'and' and 'space' is just more space...

Any takers on the snowglobe thought experiment? Does it make sense? If there is a higher dimension, can any observer assume he is stationary and central (which seem to be a requirement for General Relativity to make complete sense.

    What do you think?

I read a lot, Wick, and find that I need to allow much of what I read, time to 'soak'. Have observed that I can do many things on 'auto pilot', including writing creatively, or speaking to things with which I am familiar. I also enjoy seeking out and posting music, exchanging with Steve, Racecar and Sally among others on occasion, on the Just Some Music thread.

New concepts seem to require that my night shift mind and my day shift mind have equal opportunity to contemplate, before I may or may not comprehend the subject of the discussion.

As mentioned elsewhere, I am using myself as a test subject in certain research that is of personal interest and benefit, quite aware that my observations may be more subjective than scientific, yet I am analytical by nature, and have been able to share observations that have been helpful to others working the night shift. Some are even beginning to seek me out with their shift related questions, which also adds to my frame of reference.

I'll let you know if anything gells with me, from the post you made, after it has processed a little longer.

    As ever,

    Lorrina
